It’s profoundly silly—that’s hardly news—but Muppets Most Wanted is still engaging and entertaining, even if it’s a noticeable step back from the 2011 reintroduction, simply called The Muppets. Fresh off the success of that film, the gang embarks on an ill-conceived world tour. It’s a front for a string of daring heists undertaken by their scheming new manager, played by Ricky Gervais. On a disastrous tour through Europe, Gervais and a Kermit lookalike (Constantine, the world’s most dangerous frog), put the pieces in place to steal the Crown Jewels. Meanwhile, the real Kermit is rotting away in a Siberian gulag. You expect cameos, and there are some nice appearances, and you expect musical numbers, but most of them don’t stick with you long. Good for fans, but not really a great outing for the Muppets.
