Married Priests

American institutions--government, business, the church--have had a tough year. All face questions of leadership and moral credibility.

There has been plenty of news coverage of the allegations of child and sex abuse against hundreds of Roman Catholic priests in America, including some high-ranking church officials. The Catholic Diocese of Tucson has responded to allegations of abuse by 15 of its priests in recent decades.

Among the questions before the church is whether women should be ordained as priests and whether married men should be allowed to continue as priests. The celibacy rule has resulted in 20,000 individuals leaving active priest service in order to get married.

"Married Priests?," our cover story, was written by former Boston Phoenix reporter Michelle Chihara. The Independent Media Institute provided cover and interior art.

More than 30 alternative newspapers around the country are publishing this story. Spearheaded by the Sacramento News & Review and Independent Media Institute, this nationwide project is an example of how alternative newspapers are cooperating.
