A 2013 survey by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research found that 65 percent of Americans believe we only use 10 percent of our brain. So, Luc Besson’s Lucy has found its audience. The 10 percent thing is a myth, backed by zero that’s scientific and refuted by all that is. Still, Besson has movie tickets to sell, and so Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) accidentally gets a new designer drug in her bloodstream when being forced into duty as a drug mule. Regardless of what effect it’s supposed to have, the drug actually heightens all of Lucy’s senses and acuity, until she reaches God-like levels, perfect for fighting Chinese mobsters, apparently. Conceptually, it’s fun if entirely incorrect, and the effects are pretty spellbinding. But it’s a little hard to stay connected to the premise when Lucy starts controlling space and time.
