Smart thoughts David. I have been thinking along these same lines. But, I offer this back. Closing loopholes IS about increasing taxes on the wealthy and maybe a great first step? The second step is that government, more properly funded, can help improve people's lives. Then, the people would be more willing to trust government with more of their hard-earned dollars.
You are absolutely right David! Giving districts the authority to relax teacher certification will tempt some districts to follow the path of least resistance and hire non-professionals who will not contribute to increases in achievement. Teachers today are forced to deal with a multitude of harsh realities that are challenging even for certified, highly skilled and seasoned professionals Expecting those with no expertise to do the same is crazy!
To More Ideology: One of the great things about district schools is they are led by locally elected governing boards. If you are unhappy with the way TUSD is run, you and others can work to elect new board members. That is an option you don't have in commercial (private and charter) schools. I would also offer that you should not judge every district school in Arizona by one example...whether that example is good or bad. Perhaps my choice of the word "WRONG" was unfortunate, but...just as I am probably not fully aware of what goes on in TUSD, you are not entirely well-informed about what is happening in district schools across the state.
To "More ideology": WRONG! The opposition to vouchers has nothing to do with political gains and EVERYTHING to do with not wanting our tax dollars to go to private/parochial schools with no accountability and transparency. I want to know what return on investment I get from my tax dollars allocated to education and with district schools I get that through open board meetings, annual audits, test scores, etc.
To John Hohn: way to go John. So...it is ALL about you. Well, maybe I don't want to pay for the roads you drive on in your neighborhood. After all, I don't drive there. I want to designate my road maintenance tax dollars to only go to the roads I drive on. How's that working for you? There is such a thing as a being a responsible citizen you know. There are expenses that we must bear to be able to enjoy an acceptable quality of life. I believe funding public education so that ALL children have the opportunity to be productive members of society is one of the most critical of those responsibilities. I am SO TIRED of the "IT'S ALL ABOUT ME" attitude!!!!!
To Jo: OMG!!!!! Commercial schools (charter & private) are the ones with no accountability! Get your facts straight! Commercial schools are often run by corporate boards who are not accountable to the voters and aren't required to open up their books. District schools are governed by school board members elected by local voters. They are entirely transparent and accountable to the voters!!!!!
To quote Reagan, "there you go again" Danehick. Christiane wasn't lecturing America and she wasn't talking about Trump. She WAS talking to other journalists about their need to step up and report the facts and question our leaders. in order to ensure the survival of our democracy.
OMG! Why, when anyone says anything critical of Trump, the only thing his supporters can come back with is "Yeah, but Hillary...!!!" Give me a break. Can you not just respond about your guy? Ours lost. We lost, In my opinion, the American people lost.
I agree with David and Christiane's message. The media has to figure out how to do their job in this post-truth, Trumpian world. A free press has played a major role in making America the greatest democracy in the world and is absolutely key to keeping it that way!!
