Chuck is correct that public schools run by the parents and community were the most successful of their time. They were also the least successful schools of their time, since all public schools were - and are - run by the parents and the community. It simply depended on the community. And one-room schoolhouses were not abolished. They died out due to attrition.
The book of the same title is also a delight. I look forward to seeing this.
Let's not be naïve. Politics is, by its very nature, corrupt. It always has been and always will be. The most effective President will be the one who can best game the system.
