A more wholesome fiesta is planned at Pueblo Gardens Elementary; a "fiesta and fundraiser" is aimed at making money to enrich the lives of local youngsters.
Grupo Raices, a band of Andean musicians from Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, is pitching in to help put the emphasis on fun. Pueblo Gardens Folklorica and other school groups also will entertain the crowd.
The afternoon of music and dancing will include food and plants from the school garden.
The event is from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Pueblo, 2210 E. 33rd St., between Kino and Country Club. Tickets are just $5 adults, free to all children. For more information, call 225-2700.
Adopt a dog. From the did you know? file, this just in from the Humane Society: some 75 percent of the six million dogs entering animal shelters each year are mixed breeds.
Of those, as many as two million are overlooked and have to be euthanized each year.
Mayday for Mutts on Saturday and Sunday is an attempt by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona to ensure that every dog does, in fact, have his day.
"Every day we see wonderful, healthy, well-behaved mutts passed over simply because they are competing for homes against purebreds and puppies. Mayday for Mutts is a celebration of diversity within the canine community," said Susan Wilson, executive director of the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.
Organizers hope to raise awareness that mutts make great companions by showcasing a variety of all-breeds. For two days only, all mutts older than 6 months will be available for half the normal adoption fee.
The reduced fee of $35 includes first vaccinations and complimentary spay/neuter surgery. Also, new adopters and the general public will be offered half-price for microchipping ($12.50) and the first 100 adopters will get two-for-one passes to the Desert Museum.
To make these two days even more special, Ben Gordon of Animal Magnetism will be on hand from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday to help answer any questions about pet behavior.

Love a parade? Kids line up to listen when Jean Baxter speaks.
And why not? Most kids are intrigued with puppets--and Baxter is all about puppets. Collecting puppets has been her lifelong love. Sharing them with children is now part of her storytelling passion.
Tellers of Tales presents Puppets on Parade, during which Baxter will demonstrate the use of puppets and other such story "enhancers."
The program, open and free to the public, starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Himmel Park Library, 1035 N. Treat Ave.
