Cheap Thrills

Pretty deep stuff. Hmmm . . . a five-minute interpretation of the Book of Revelation in mime and a Bach fugue played on the one-stringed Chinese violin.

When the folks at HazMat Basement Gallery go sniffing around for underground talent, they sure come up with some interesting acts.

Unusual performances (some of them involving little or no real or imagined talent) will be featured at a showcase to benefit the Museum of Contemporary Art. Local luminaries of the arts and office professions will provide some of the entertainment, but the real focus of this showcase will be to reveal the hidden talents of willing audience members.

That's right --you.

A sign-up sheet will be available at the door. Talent is not necessary or required, just a willingness to try something other than "singer-songwriting."

A cash bar may help loosen you up for the stage in the event that begins at 9 Saturday night at HazMat, 191 E. Toole Ave. Admission is just $3. For more information, call 624-5019.

Giggle room. Laugh your butt off with some folks who really know funny.

Believe it or not, the University Activities Board's Comedy Corner is the nation's oldest college sketch comedy troupe, renowned for hilarious sketch and improv comedy as well as the annual S.I.C.K. comedy festival held in early spring.

You can check out some pretty funny (not to be confused with pretty, funny people) during a weekly sketch and improv comedy show at the UA.

Best of all--it's free.

The fun starts at 10:15 p.m. every Wednesday through May 1 in the Modern Languages Building, Room 350, UA Campus, on the north side of the mall, west of Cherry Avenue. For more information, call 621-0764 or visit www.union.arizona.edu/csil/uab.

Gearheads, hear this. About the only thing better than a utility room full of outdoor gear is a utility room full of better outdoor gear.

Clean out your closet or just scrounge for more stuff at the annual Summit Hut Swap Meet on Sunday. Buy, sell, or trade used outdoor gear and meet other bargain-hunting outdoorsy types. The Swap Meet is a great place to get amazing deals on used gear and clothes or earn some cash so you can upgrade your own equipment.

Summit Hut provides the space and tables. You bring your gear and clothes, cash, and be ready to dicker. Sellers, please remember to bring change.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Speedway and Rosemont store, 5045 E. Speedway Boulevard. For more information, call 325-1554 or email sharon@summithut.com.
