Cheap Thrills

Nice lines, baby. Whether you're into curvaceous Swedes, topless Swedes or just rugged, dependable types, here's an event for you.

See these and many other Volvos at a gathering billing itself as a "car show-swap meet-tech session-general good time."

Got an old Volvo? Give it a nice day out among friends. The Cactus Chapter-Volvo Club of America's annual spring event is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Prestige Import Service, 3008 N. Stone Ave. The event is free and the public is welcome. For more information, call 888-4700 or 321-0955.

PETAL POWER. Budding gardeners who get a rise out of roses may want to get out the pruning sheers.

The competition at the annual Tucson Rose Show will be stiff: Hundreds of fabulous roses are likely to be entered for the prize of most beautiful rose.

Thumb not exactly green? You don't have to bring a rose to enjoy this. The event, hosted by the Rose Society of Tucson, is a great chance to see many varieties and get information on how to start growing roses.

A video called "Growing Roses in the Desert" will be for sale. Visitors also can buy miniature rose bushes and single stem cut roses.

The free event is from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Presbyterian Church at Fourth Avenue and University Boulevard. Entries must be made between 7 and 10 a.m. For rules, visit www.tucsonrose.org. Judging takes place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. For more information, call 797-7890 or 623-8285.
