Cheap Thrills

LIVELY LANDSCAPES. The landscape works of three artists are now on display at El Presidio Gallery.

The exhibition, which opens Friday and runs through August 1, features the works of Glenn Dean, Tom Fagan and George Strickland.

El Presidio is located at 3001 E. Skyline Drive, at Campbell Avenue, in the El Cortijo Art Annex. El Presidio's eastside location is at 7000 E. Tanque Verde Road, in Santa Fe Square. For more information, call 733-0388.

MAD SCIENCE FAIR. If you haven't taken advantage of any events at Bookman's this summer, load up the kids Thursday or Saturday for some fun.

The Mad Science Show on Thursday features the zany guys from Mad Science, who will deliver a fun science show and might even teach the kids a lesson or two. The event, from 11 a.m. to noon, is free.

On Saturday, check out acoustic rock and roll guitarist Gus Brett, whose style has been described as gritty, positive and spiritual. (Friends say he reminds them of Dylan and plays like Reed.) Brett plays in a free concert from noon to 2 p.m.

Both events are at Bookman's, 1930 E. Grant Road. For more information, call Chris Stead at 325-5767 or visit www.bookman's.com.

TAKE A SEAT. Some furniture just really grabs your attention, especially pieces crafted of fine wood.

Danes on the Move, Tomorrow's Seating Today is a traveling exhibition of 17 sleek chairs. After a March 10 opening in New York, a writer from the Washington Post wrote, "Now a small exhibition of astonishingly artful chairs suggests a fresh wave of creativity (that) deserves rapt attention."

Copenhagen Imports, 3660 E. Fort Lowell Road, is hosting the exhibition July 21 through 29. For more information, call 795-0316.

DON'T FORGET SUNSCREEN. Ever wonder about some of the stories you've heard about the desert?

Folklore, Myths and Legends is a moderated one-hour hike in Sabino Canyon that will reveal that some desert myths are rooted in fact, while other tall tales pale in comparison to the often-bizarre truth.

Bring plenty of water, a hat and sunblock. A notepad (for keeping the record straight), camera and walking stick are optional.

The hike, part of a natural history exploration series in the park, begins at 8 a.m. Saturday in the courtyard of the Sabino Canyon Visitors Center. For more information, call 748-8700.
