HIGHER CAUSE: Git yourself outdoors, blow off the stink, and help mitigate desert destruction with the Sky Island Alliance.

These conservation-minded folks need hikers or mountain bikers to help map a potential wilderness area in the gorgeous Canelo Hills south of Sonoita. The maps will contribute to an eventual regional habitat preservation proposal.

Mapping gets underway on Saturday and Sunday, February 12 and 13, with volunteers needed for one or both days. An introductory session meets at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 10, in the Tucson Audubon Society, 300 E. University Blvd. Call 795-2704 for information.

BIG BLUE YONDER: The Tucson-Pima Library continues its tribute to the blues with a musical showcase and art exhibit.

The Tucson High School Blues Band gets lowdown in a big, brassy way with a free performance from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 16, in the Nanini Branch Library, 7300 N. Shannon Road. For details, call 791-4626.

The Main Library, 101 N. Stone Ave., continues its fine photography exhibit, Between the Acts. Featuring works by acclaimed lensman David Horowitz, the show reveals noted African-American musicians captured in offstage moments. The exhibit runs through February. Call 791-4391 for information.

REFRESHING FAMILY VALUES: The Lesbian Looks film series continues with two powerful documentaries that "give new meaning to family values."

Presented by the UA Committee on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Studies, tonight's screening features "Our House," Meema Spadola's touching profile of five diverse gay families in New York, New Jersey, Arkansas and Arizona. Also showing is "Laugh in the Dark," Justine Pimlott's chronicle of the rise and fall of a community now lost to AIDS.

The free screenings are 7:30 p.m. Saturday, February 12, in the UA Modern Languages Auditorium, north of the main mall and east of the Administration Building. For details, call 621-1239.

STRUT 'N' FLAP: Strut your stuff and flap your lips at a Social Dance hosted by former Dubliner Sean McManus.

Sway to the recorded tunes by the Chairman of the Board, a.k.a. Mr. Sinatra, the great orchestra of Maynard Ferguson and mucho más. Attendees are invited to bring their own CDs as well. All profits benefit American war vets.
