Captured in Time

Tucson Architecture by Danny Martin

Danny Martin is rolling with the architectural changes and capturing the local scene with his drawings before it transforms.

"Tucson's landscape is changing rapidly," Martin said. "I'm just trying to capture what makes this community so special to me. This project is just my way of documenting a place that I love."

Martin will be displaying 35 pieces of his renditions of local landmarks from 6 to 8 p.m. this Saturday, March 8, at You and Your Big Ideas Gallery, 174 E. Toole Ave.

"I started the series with places that are naturally in my day-to-day life, though all of the places/subjects will mean something to me," Martin said. The 34-year-old artist will have some hand-pulled screen prints for sale.

Martin said the art opening is a work in progress and this is just the tip of the proverbial saguaro. The gallery's Facebook page has teased some of Martin's pieces including the iconic Tiki head outside Hut Tucson, the vintage neon sign of the southside's Arizona Motel and downtown's historic Hotel Congress.

"Pieces range anywhere from shrines, bars and the new TEP building," Martin said. "My favorite (pieces) in the series is a tie between the Tucson Inn and the Taco Borracho," Martin confessed.

The University of Arizona alumni plans on collecting the displaying art in to a 14-by 17-inch letter press art book collection that will debut in the fall.
