SLAUGHTER HOUSE

Rep. Eddie Farnsworth tells the press that legislation sponsored by moderate GOP Sens. Linda Binder and Slade Mead will be killed because they've failed to support Republican proposals. Farnsworth complains: If we were elected to think about the impact of bills, I wouldn't be here!

BILLBOARD BILL GORED

On a 4-4 vote, the Senate Commerce Committee kills House Bill 2364, which would have allowed billboards to install flashing messages every six seconds. Arizona Department of Transportation officials had warned such signs could cost state $50 million in federal highway aid.

HEY, THE MONEY IS JUST SITTING THERE

Business lobbyists whisper that state lawmakers are now aiming to raid the State Compensation Fund for $300 million to help balance next year's budget. Officials from the comp fund, which provides workmen's compensation insurance for small businesses, consider legal action that could tie up budget process for months, if not years.

NUMBERS RACKET

On 4-4 vote, the Senate Judiciary Committee kills House Bill 2436, which would have allowed cities and towns to steeply increase number of signatures needed for referendum and recall.

TERMINATED

Sponsors say legislation to mandate a 24-hour waiting period before a woman can get an abortion is dead for the session.

GREEN LIGHT

The Senate Natural Resources Committee votes 6-0 to approve Gov. Janet Napolitano's nomination of Steve Owens as head of Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. The former Gore aide must now be approved by entire Senate.
