Colonia Solana neighborhood at Arroyo Chico wash

Many a startled motorist has noticed that there is a pack of urban coyotes that calls the central stretch of Broadway Boulevard home. Enjoyed by some, feared by others, these cosmopolitan critters are a symbol of the vibrant desert ecosystem that has adapted to life in the big city. The neighborhood bordering the Arroyo Chico wash just south of Broadway--known as Colonia Solana--is particularly blessed with natural wonders. In addition to its canine citizens, the area teems with quail, round-tailed ground squirrels, whiptail lizards and rabbits. Keen-eyed folks might even spot a resident hawk family. It's worth mentioning that the coyotes have been the subject of controversy, since they've gotten used to having humans around; keeping some distance from the critters is safest for everyone, and will help keep this urban ecosystem intact for future generations.
