Fourth Avenue in South Tucson

Fifteen years ago, they were controversial, but now circles, chicanes and islands dot many local roadways. Intended to slow traffic, they do it well, even if Steve McQueen driving a Mustang in Bullitt set a bad example on the streets of San Francisco. Our local favorite is Fourth Avenue cutting through South Tucson. Winding down the community's restaurant row, this extensively landscaped street is very attractive, while also keeping cars at 25 mph. The uniqueness of this project is that it doesn't use physical barriers in the street. Instead, employing a very winding course reminiscent of McQueen driving a Porsche 917 in Le Mans, south Fourth Avenue slows down motorists as they pass flowering shrubs and fancy lampposts, tiled murals and decorative arches.
