Best Tourism Idea Since the Car

La Siesta Motel

Staff Pick

Have you heard? There's a movement afoot to make boutique motels (think Austin, Texas) out of all those remnants of Miracle Mile's heyday as a tourist mecca in the '40s and '50s. It's worth the effort just to keep all that funky-cool, vintage neon lit. Best in class so far is this reasonably priced, rehabbed charmer, in which every room has its own personality, and some have kitchens for longer stays. A party-oriented brick barbecue area flanks the saltwater pool. The only notable 21st century enhancements are free Wi-Fi and cooling misters poolside. Even a diehard heritage fanatic couldn't fault those.
