Frances Murray

After years of absence from the local art scene, Murray burst out in her full glory this fall in a one-woman show at Etherton. Celebrating her 30 years in photography, the exhibition of stunning black and whites travels from her earliest works--the portraits she made of her young daughters in their West University back yard years ago--to the erotic female nudes she eventually graduated to. Murray still stays close to home, and her glimmering still-lifes catch the intense desert light beaming through the windows of her house. Yet the photographer trades in ambiguous narratives, and her simple, stripped-down shapes, bathed in shadow and light, always suggest greater meanings.
