READERS' PICK: Apparently three different, active baseball organizations call Reid Park's Hi Corbett Field home -- USA Baseball; the Colorado Rockies in training; and Challenger Little League. Those of us who'd prefer to hang around the zoo's polar bear pool might remain unaware of the baseball traffic, but we're not unaware of the multiplicity of activities this perennial favorite has to offer: the dynamite DeMeester Performance Center (see page 40), the Reid Park Zoo, Rose Lake, plenty of sturdy playground equipment, a soccer field, horseshoe pits and plenty of lawns and ramadas for family gatherings and kids' parties. All that, adjacent to Randolph's two 18-hole golf courses, driving range, rec center, pool, tennis club and courts, and the Dave Bell bike and jogging track. This midtown facility is a recreation oasis for one and all.
READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: Himmel Park, 1000 N. Tucson Blvd. As a city entity, Himmel Park is open to everyone. The midtown park, on Tucson Boulevard, is well-kept and well-used. One can almost read the seasons by observing the steady activity there: soccer, touch football, softball, volleyball, tennis, swimming and diving. Fencing and outdoor community theatre have made appearances here over the years as well. In autumn, the leaves change color and fall in deep piles. In spring, families spread out large picnics. In the monsoon season, the grass turns a Midwestern emerald-green. And the mosquitoes can grow as large as cactus wrens.
