When these two teams get together on the hardwood, the intensity is off the charts, and the mutual dislike is palpable. It's CDO, the snobby public school, against Salpointe, the snobby private school, in a rivalry that dates back decades and has produced dozens of nail-biting finishes, sent many players on to Division 1 college careers and sparked a couple near-riots. CDO Coach John Saintignon, a Salpointe alum, is none too popular at his alma mater. It's unclear how the sudden firing of former Salpointe Coach Brian Peabody--who was none too popular just about anywhere--will affect the rivalry, but odds are it will remain heated. While Amphi and Marana Mountain View have won the past two 5A-South championships, respectively, the focus remains on perennial state contenders Salpointe and CDO.
