In 1984, members of Tucson's LGBT community were opening their homes for weekly meetings to support Tucson youths struggling with issues surrounding their sexual identities. Over time, those meetings evolved into Wingspan, with a charter encompassing all age groups and a wide range of issues affecting the LGBT community. When the recession recently forced draconian cutbacks, Wingspan drew on the same volunteer commitment and energy that got them started. They've hunkered down and kept going. Meanwhile, isolation and confusion still occur, one kid at a time. For their sakes, let's hope Wingspan will always be there.
