Fort Lowell Park and Museum

You needn't dive into the annals of the University of Arizona—or brave that area's parking (and other) perils—to get a captivating historical education in and about the Old Pueblo. Head to the Fort Lowell Museum instead. Once you push past the park and its pond full of freshwater turtles and pompadoured ducks (cute, though probably not part of our ethnobiological history), you'll find the museum itself, curated by the Arizona Historical Society and mostly dedicated to our region's military history. Guide your own tour or arrange one. Then head outside the museum proper, where a signed trail leads to some of the fort's real historic buildings—and, most amazingly, a real prehistoric Hohokam village site. Being transported through history to the ruins of an ancient civilization brought to life? Now that's magic.
