Rattlesnake Bridge (by Simon Donovan)

Who says this bridge doesn't go anywhere? Start with the tail poking up whimsically from the concrete at its south end, then amble through its bowels over the speeding traffic, and you'll emerge from its open mouth at a tiny amphitheater, perfect for the backyard play ready to move on to bigger things. From there, the path takes you to a charming playground, Arroyo Chico and Iron Horse Barrio, tucked between downtown and the UA. But what better design is there for a bridge than one everyone wants to cross, regardless of its destinations? And you gotta love how that snake sneaks a smile up on you during the drive to the dentist or the courthouse. The spirit of the thing captures Tucson's own: Thankfully, it doesn't take itself too seriously.
