That Ofelia Zepeda is recognized by popular vote, even in an alternative local newspaper, is a spectacular testament to her accomplishments. Zepeda's career as a linguist, scholar, intellectual, academic leader and, especially, poet, has been built entirely on sharing her intimate understanding of her Tohono O'odham culture. She has singularly made us aware of that culture's presence and influence on what we love about this place, which was O'odham for centuries before it became our home.
