If you haven't been following Chicago alternative hip-hop artist Serengeti through his many collaborations and side projects, it's time to pay attention. Last time Serengeti came through Tucson, he was performing his high-concept, rap-collab with Open Mike Eagle known as Cavanaugh. Now he's coming back to town with Yoni Wolf (who produced Serengeti's 2011 solo release Family & Friends, and was formerly known as Why?) in support of their 2016 Yoni & Geti release Testarossa. As with his other work, the new album features a fully conceived backstory, though this time the record chronicles the lives of star-crossed fictional lovers Maddy and Davy. According to Joyful Noise Recordings, the story follows Davy on the road with his garage-rock revival band while his new wife is left home to take care of their children. Musically, the album shifts between lush and dreamy textures to hard-driving beats. Intense piano flourishes are as welcome here as electro-laced rhythms.
You can catch Yoni & Geti on Monday, July 18 at Club Congress beginning at 7 p.m. Local support offers both experimental and hip-hop performers courtesy of Headlock and Leisure Hive's Ryan Chavira. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. It is a 16 and over event.
