B-Sides: Orkesta Mendoza

Return of the Orkesta

It's safe to say that it's been a pretty busy year for bandleader and multi-instrumentalist Sergio Mendoza. Between touring with Calexico in support of their new album "Edge of Sun" internationally, leading his group Orkesta Mendoza to festivals like Austin's Pachanga Latino Music Festival and arranging music and playing live with the Mexrissey project—a group of prolific Mexican musicians reimagining the music of Morrissey with Latin flair—the Nogales native turned Tucsonan has been bouncing around the world the past few months.

Well, if you've missed Mendoza's mambo banda extraordinaire while he's been away, now is your chance to catch him at a hometown show on Saturday, May 23. For the show at the Rialto Theatre, Mendoza's band will include romantic local Flamenco singer and guitarist Salvador Duran. Tucson's cumbia contingent Vox Urbana will open the show, which starts at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the show are available at the box office and online in advance at www.rialtotheatre.com for $12. They will also be sold at the door, located at 318 E. Congress St., for $15 the day of the show.
