Actress and environmental activist Daryl Hannah narrates this documentary about women from all over the globe striving to make the world a better place. From the arid plains of Kenya to the crystal lakes of Minnesota, and from the depleting rainforests of Ecuador to the urban farms of the Bronx, Arise honors the women behind progressive movements in their communities. There’s a minor theme that runs throughout the doc about that special kind of love and healing that only a woman can emit, and Hannah’s narration often slips into hippy-dippy territory, complete with embarrassingly bad poetry, but don’t let any of that scare you away. A lot of women out there are going up against extreme odds to make significant changes, and Arise is a remarkable portrait of their struggles and accomplishments.
