Well, for starters, all films are manipulative. Can you name one that didn't ask you to believe something based only on the story it was telling? And while I didn't like the film nearly as much as Bob and agree with you about the strength of Hathaway's performance, I'm not in the 'sappy bullshit' camp with you. I just didn't feel anything larger than a healthy respect for it, but as a production and spectacle, Les Miserables is exceedingly well-assembled.
