At approx. 37 y/o, I did not know he was so young! (Never met the guy.)
Your lede, which uses both Chicano and Latino in the same sentence, helped me learn what a Chicano is today. Simply: Chicano = A Mexican-born person (and only Mexican born) living in America. Latino, I guess, would be an American-born person of Mexican heritage.
I previously had assumed the two words were interchangeable, with no birth identity attached -- because I never looked.
Long-form journalism is out? If done right, I'd argue it shouldn't be.
Is this just because of the overstimulated ADD generation or the dumbing down of America?

He sounds like he was a great man who did great things post-journalism because he retained a personal passion and fire in himself.
