Bedroxx is really fun~ great spot for teens to hang out. It's a good value for what you get, and a way to have a fun day on a budget.
I was noticing that it's been 10 years since golden pin lanes won a Best of Tucson...maybe it's time to get rid of off track betting? I would never go to a place that had off track betting. I would totally go back to Golden Pin lanes again if they were not supporting the dog racing. Greyhound racing is a disgusting thing to do to such sweet dogs.
What ass-hats to steal like this. This toy shop is amazing. I know how difficult it is to keep a small shop going but keep on truckin!!!When My shop was robbed of a handcrafted Maille horseman's tunic, I almost closed. Don't let them get you down!!!
Another great article Tim! We are in an animal crisis here in Tucson. We need shelter reform, and we need it now. Healthy dogs- adoptable dogs- go in and sick dogs come out. More than 2 days of antibiotics are going to be necessary for the sick dogs. It's like throwing away antibiotics.
I can't believe how people treat animals in this town, we kill thousands when we don't want them anymore and over breed our animal population. One litter is too many, Spay and Neuter- every single pet. We have greyhound racing, and that's a whole 'nother story....
If a person is to betray their best friend and get rid of them, humane society will at least evaluate the animal and tell you if she stands a chance at getting adopted, and you can check up on them. You can spange (spare change-like ask random people for moolah) the 35 dollar drop off fee. It's the better way to go if you are optionless.
I shouldn't be surprised at the cruelty in my community...but then it reaches new heights and I am speechless.
So...spay and neuter please and don't breed or buy when thousands are dying. Support local rescues by donating or volunteering and you can save a life by fostering a dog or cat that needs temporary digs until they get adopted. Fostering is fun and very rewarding!
Beltane- the video slots will actually let the race continue forever if they get them. Say NO to slots. They want to use that to prop up the industry so they can run more dogs into the ground. They already have a "hardship" tax credit and don't even cover the budget for their oversight (AZ dept of Racing). We the taxpayers are paying for the oversight. Soooo I wish they would oversee!!!
This article has been a long time coming almost a year after voters passed Tucson Dog Protection- thank you Tim Vanderpool for this artice. People ask themselves "Why do we vote? Why bother if our voice doesn't count?" The voters decided to pass the Tucson Dog Protection Act, Tom Taylor goes about business as usual. Will someone PLEASE enforce this ordinance? Why can't PACC go on property, greyhounds are still DOGS? Why isn't Az Dept of Racing doing something about this? South Tucson City Council? Police, Sheriff's Dept? Where can we turn to?
The dogs who have no voice are hoping you'll speak for them- write your legislators. (BTW- the track lawyer is running for office, guess who I'm not voting for) The City ordinance doesn't ask for much- I personally think it doesn't go far enough. Three humane improvements for the dogs:
1) no more than 18 hours in a cage 2) cook their meat so they don't get poisoned by 4-d Raw meat 3)No anabolic steroids for performance enhancement or to suppress heat- separate the females instead.
They prove they can't play by the rules again and again- Down With Dog racing!!! Get rid of this blight and make dog racing illegal in the state of Arizona. I'm disgusted that my tax dollars are being used to subsidize state sanctioned animal abuse.
This seems typical of Tucson Greyhound park's "passing the buck" style of management-or mis-management. Every horror-show that happens there is someone else's fault. Employees are not allowed to have cameras in the kennels, so they will not take photos of the dogs living conditions. Missing dogs the fault of a kill truck operator, horrifyingly filthy living conditions is the fault of a trainer. The buck does stop with Greyhound Racing being a antiquated, cruel, and dying sport. Do away with it and Tucson will be better off.
I used to think- these dogs are athletes, why wouldn't they treat them well? Wouldn't it make them run better if they were cared for? It remains that they are a disposable commodity and if one can't run there are 5 more to replace the dog. If she breaks her leg on a poorly graded track, throw her away and get another to replace her.
I wouldn't consider myself a whako animal rights freak, as the track would paint anyone who opposes the practice of racing these dogs...I just think it's wrong to bite the paw that feeds you. These people make their living off the dogs, and the dogs suffer unspeakable torture for it.
