We are the only Capoeira Angola group in Tucson. Capoeira Angola is the dance of the Zebra. When young Zebra are growing up, they play fight like children playing tag. As the Zebra develops and finds a mate, he must first play with the father of the potential mate and if he is strong enough, he may have the mate. In West Africa, many tribes saw this interaction and began to as well use this method to bond with one another in a sacred ritual. When they were brought to Brazil, Angola was used by the slaves to escape slavery and was eventually adopted into Brazil's military as a martial art. Capoeira became contemporary when Mestre Bimba in the 1930s, brought Capoeira to the U.S. in a structured, "work-out" for upper class and university students. Much controversy surrounds this topic because many people are led to believe that Capoeira is in fact, this contemporary form which is far from the truth. We hold classes at SKRAPPYS Community Youth Center at 191 East Toole Avenue and is open to all those who wish to learn this beautiful art form that not only builds self assurance, but also satisfies the conscience with its traditional qualities. Classes are held from 4pm to 6pm on fridays and saturdays and are 5 dolars per student. Bring your friends and experience historical context at its finest!
