Re: “T.H.R.E.A.T. Watch: Normalizing 'White Nationalism' Down to 'Nationalism'

Here you go, David Safier and Paul Stapleton-Smith: one example of a real "THREAT."

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/24/us/politics/wilbur-ross-commerce-trump.html?ref=politics&_r=0

"President-elect Donald J. Trump is expected to select as commerce secretary Wilbur Ross, a billionaire investor who became known as the king of bankruptcy for buying, restructuring and selling off steel makers and other fading industrial companies, officials on the transition team said on Thursday. [...] Mr. Ross, 78, an economic adviser to Mr. Trumps campaign whose fortune is estimated by Forbes to be $2.9 billion [...] has [...] pressed for cutting the corporate tax rate to 15 percent, from 35 percent, and reducing taxes and regulations on energy companies."

But will these sorts of developments get any coverage in Safier's blog or in comments from Stapleton-Smith and his ilk? That would be about as doubtful as Safier's blog or PCDP / DGT comment stream regulars providing honest discussions of the outsourcing of subs in TUSD or ESI's donations to Foster and Juarez.

While the politicians they endorse are busy betraying those who should form their natural constituencies, they will keep creating distractions and whipping up concern over the fake "issues" they promote as news.

Re: “Danehy

Defense of Trump the Candidate can only go so far when TV cameras caught many, (not all) Trump supporters engaging in some really rabid racist, sexist behavior. Once you see a guy (from another state) wearing a T-shirt that says in big letters "She's a C-word (spelled out) Vote Trump," it is unforgettable. The first Tea Party people learned that they had to tone down on-camera loons. Now, the "winners" behind this election have some catching up to do. Trump the President has to lead now.

Re: “Danehy

This was rather appalling to read. I really dislike your opinions. Graffiti shouldn't be a problem. I think there are much bigger problems to address in Tucson. One being education. The youth of Arizona are not challenged in the classrooms and one might say that this has an effect on what the students are doing with their free time. I, as a 16-year old female high school student, feel that the government spends way too much time on the "negative" aspects of our society that will not be changed any time soon. Also, if it wants graffiti to be lessened, it would look for the root of the problem instead of taking the seemingly easy route. I am ashamed that my city, state, and country can't deal with such petty internal problems and get so caught up in them. I hope this changes soon, but it won't if the powerful don't get over themselves.

Nothing better to say

Re: “Editor's Note

The ascension of the Great Leader has already, just since the election, occasioned hundreds of attacks against peaceful people whose skin is simply too dark or whose accent is "too foreign," or whose dress is too different for his acolytes. This is not completely unrelated to the fact that He used hateful words and ideas in His campaign. He has allied Himself with skinheads, Ku Klux Klaners, and Nazis. All hail the Great Leader!

Re: “Hotel Heights

For me, this is exciting. Sort of.
I'll never use the hotel. Its a nice, visual thing for me and for many others as well who arrived in Tucson in the early seventies. Back then Tucson was already afflicted with the aftereffects (whoops, that was a mistake). of the downtown demolition of entire barrios to make way for a bunker complex designed by graduates of the East Berlin School of unwanted architecture. We installed a fountain in front of the community center with no shade whatsoever and it gradually died, being maintained by people who have gradually killed off all fountains downtown because as we all know, we live in the desert and fountains are bad because homeless people used them for bathing. Those same people also let the doors rot off the Leo Rich Theater. Since then, we've finally made some fixes to the complex and did some major overhaul work to the whole thing but gues what? It still sits underused most of the time. Marketing skills are lacking.
And who wants to come to this area for a conference or a good international get-together? It's hard to sell downtown still, with a music hall that looks like something from somewhere else, a broken fountain in front and an entire housing complex fenced off with a canvas fence, a revenge plot by HSL properties who also owns the dead hotel on the corner, which I affectionately have named the pink flamingo.
Whatever is going on between the City and HSL properties certainly deserves attention. Conferences have been held by design groups and the demolition of La Placita village was recommended. It was a failed project, and I would bet that some parts of that complex were NEVER occupied since it was built. But I digress. Soon the bus stop will be replaced by new construction as well. There's a grocery store downtown. The Chicago store is being fixed up for new occupants. Progress. No more funky art galleries, no more pharaoh store, no more grill. Hopefully the magazine store will survive. And hopefully, the people who move into the new places will also have ideas, because now its starting to look boring to me.

Re: “Douglas Revisited

First of all, I'm a fan of Bernal's photography. So for those of you who have not seen his pictures, take the effort to do so. The problem is that we might not get to see them again anytime soon.
To spend three years as is stated in the article to get the exhibit ready is a signal of the issue here. Photography is a visual medium, digital or film. For others, it an entity or object that needs to be protected almost at all costs. Restricting access to the object is part of the ritual. As an avid photographer, I find the activities of archivists peculiar, almost like packratting, or acting like one of those peculiar neighbors who fills their house with junk. While taking care of photographs, especially those on film, is a procedure that requires training and skill, the overall behavior, acting like exposure to light or actually letting humans looks at the pictures as if it is some kind of religious ritual that can only take place when the planets are in a certain alignment, strikes me as absurd and outdated. Bernal's pictures can be easily scanned and placed online where we can all enjoy them all of the time. It shouldn't be a pilgrimage for the benefit of a few.

Re: “T.H.R.E.A.T. Watch: Normalizing 'White Nationalism' Down to 'Nationalism'

Actually Paul, you're ascribing some lofty ideals to a group that has done every dirty deal in the world to keep and maintain power over the darkies. There was a lot more angst fighting the germans than there was fighting the Japanese because the germans were so like us, people like the Drumpfs were sympathizers, afterall weren't most of their "hate laws" based on the U.S. model? Men like Jesse Owens were paraded around like sideshow exhibits, treated to toasts and then told they had to go sleep in the barn because blacks weren't allowed in the swanky places.

Don't worry, those guys and these guys will still stand idly by as Drumpf carves out a bigger chunk for himself. Actually, they'll caw about like jaybirds about how they "got their country back" as the water slowly rises and they realize they weren't invited into the boat, chained instead to their tarnished anchor called pride.

Re: “Danehy

Tom the real questions you must ask yourself are these. Did I acuse blacks of voting for Obama in 2008 because of skin color? Did I call them racist for doing it?

Re: “Danehy

Jeez Guys, can y'all read or what? The phrase, "Not all Trump supporters are racists..." means that a certain percentage (anywhere from some to most) of the people who voted for Donald Trump were NOT motivated by racism. (That's pretty much why the word "Not" is the first word in the sentence.) By falsely whining that I suggested that everyone who voted for Trump is a racist is a lame attempt at diverting attention away from the fact that, whatever excuse you might have had for voting for the person who ran the most racist Presidential campaign since George Wallace is fine, but it puts you in the same club with THEM. And it puts you in the indefensible position of having to claim that racism had nothing to do either Trump campaign or the outcome of the election. Why is it so hard to say "I voted for the same guy that a bunch of racists did, but I did so for different reasons?" I would never in a million years think that Bill Heuisler voted for Trump out of racism, but he has to acknowledge that he and the white supremacists who are spouting "Heil Trump!" on TV both voted for the same guy.

Re: “Margarita Bay

I have been a regular patron of Margarita Bay for almost 10 years. First and foremost, this is one of the best, if not the best location in Tucson to sign karaoke. Karaoke is available every evening, and each of the KJs (there are 3 spread across each week) knows what they are doing, and is very consistent in maintaining the "rotation" of singers, including judiciously mixing in new arrivals throughout the evening. If you have come to sing, you will get your chance. Depending on the night and the number of karaoke singers before you (and note that if you are a new arrival you do get inserted to the rotation immediately after the most immediately prior arrivals have had their first opportunity) you will get to sing as soon as is possible. Bar offers a wide variety of beverage from a good mix of draft and bottled bear, to other liquors and mixed drinks to a selection of better wines by the glass or bottle. Bartenders are expert at their craft, and without exception know how to maintain a crowd. With all of the above considered, consistently my favorite feature is the the wide mix and background of the crowd. Without exception, when you walk into the "Bay" you leave the outside world behind, and are there to enjoy an evening with a great collection of friends and acquaintences who are there for the same reason you are, to have a great evening, and for many to sing a song or two. I am a great fan of the Bay and expect to be for many years to come.
