To Norm Meader, are you kidding? We go to Phoenix to breathe GLBT air because for all intents and purposes - for us, a committed, married, middle aged, church going gay couple - GLBT is non-existent in Tucson. If people in the GLBT community are slapping themselves on the back for how GLBT friendly Tucson is, then we really do have a major problem.
Radio is good, other than political talk radio. TV? Not so much. I watched Mad Men once, and didn't see justification for "greatest drama ever" hype. The guy worried about what suit to wear, and his secretary about her status at the office. Really? I remember the British series The Prisoner. Originality these days is more about office politics or special effects. Zombies and vampires. Give me a great radio play, or an audiobook. Audio is always better for you than video because you exercise your imagination. TV is driven by ratings, and Coke ads. They don't care so much about quirky stuff like you mention. They're shooting for the mass audience, a demographic that includes NASCAR fans who munch on pork rinds while drinking Pepsi and call it paradise. --JL editor, Tower Review

Why hate on a school that produces outstanding students? I guess he'd be happier with a race to mediocrity so everyone can feel good about themselves?
As far as the Maxim top 100, I think it's probably not aimed at those qualified for AARP membership. If you don't think Selena Gomez is gorgeous, you probably need a visit to your cardiologist to see if your heart is still beating.
...I'm not sure why Tucson native and current Devo drummer Jeff Friedl rarely if ever gets mentioned in the local music media. He moved to California years ago and eventually worked/works with A Perfect Circle, Ashes Divide, The Beta Machine, Devo, Carina Round, Filter and Puscifer.
Now we have a bunch of dancers trying to profit over the contraversy surrounding the Rosemont Copper project.
Candrea is the University of Arizona softball coach. Period! Griping about down years like this column does is disgraceful. I hope Coach Candrea ignores the drivel in this column.
@W Corvi: I'm not sure where you came up with "THOUSANDS" of awards the Arizona Press Club dishes out.
I just worked my way down through its 2013 awards booklet (link below) and it's true there are many awards, but hardly thousands. (I also found no award for that Flagstaff paper you mentioned.
The booklet is good reading.
I found myself copying out leads to award-winning pieces to read later on.

Did you mean to type Nogales International rather than Nogales Independent?
Been seeing big improvements there over the last few years. Worth a look now and then, online at nogalesinternational.com
And what really happened THIS time to Rob Guarino at KVOA?
Bella D'Auria bit the dust and closed their doors after less than a year. A message on their web site blames the economy.
If Tobin thinks it's a good idea to put Medicaid expansion on the ballot, he's wrong. I predict it will pass overwhelmingly, especially in the rural areas and southern Arizona, where people actually have a heart. Then there's Maricopa, which loves the then then, outgoing Brewer...so don't count them out, either. It's a winner, in any case. Bring it on, Tobin. I see you trying to overturn it after the next election...unsuccessfully, because me thinks there will be a Democratic Governor who will veto your butt, even if you did get the votes.
Actually, the day all this came down I did a cursory check at their main website and I noticed that some of their pages were indeed hacked by the usual pharmaceutical spammers (do I have to write the name of the products and get banned?).
When I looked at their site today, the offending code was gone.
I am afraid these bozos are going to use that incident and claim "See, GoDaddy says we were hacked". In reality I figured their website was hacked several years ago and they never noticed.
The Arizona Press Club gives out THOUSANDS of awards each year - to the dozen papers in AZ. So it's no surprise that each comes home with hundreds of awards. For example, the Flag Rag pulled down the coveted 'best newspaper in southwest Flagstaff'. Their subscription rate is pathetic, and when they started charging to read it on the web, NO ONE subscribed! They even quit publishing on Mondays, since there was nothing in that edition anyway. But, it still brings home hundreds of awards from the Arizona Press Club.

Riorican: My mistake and now corrected.
