Re: “Guest Opinion

" finalized a rule to improve enforcement of existing laws to keep guns out of the hands of people with severe mental illness who are already prohibited from having guns"
There are already laws in place dealing with people that have severe mental problems being restricted from having guns, they must be declared incompetent by a judge not some flunky in a civil service job. The misdirection here that removing this power to abrogate second amendment rights from all except a judge is disingenuous. You don't like guns, I get that but so long as the second amendment is there you don't get to ignore it.

Re: “On the Theory and Practice of Bullshitting

Since we are talking about bull manure, education and truth, let's talk about some fundamentals. To define a school as a public school when it is closed to 99.6% of the public is an abuse of the language. It is not a public school at all, it is a district school and most districts are specifically designed to keep the poor and minorities out. So, ergo, districts are a racist institution. People who propagate racist institutions are logically ....

Since we began school choice in 1993 (I was the deciding vote on the education committee), most but not all schools in Arizona have become open to the public. The charter school movement made that possible. Yes, now we have the beginnings of a public school system.

The last piece of the equation is allowing students is to quit our bigotry and to allow students to not only receive their public education at district and charter schools but at religious schools. Then, every school in the state will be open to the public.

Re: “"Martha McSally Is Not Answering"

When she's up for re-election, she won't win. She damn well knows that the Trump health care and tax reform will hurt those who can least afford to be hurt, and help the wealthy. Other republicans stated proudly that they would not support the Trump health care and tax reform measures. And what does she do? Cower under her desk, hold no town hall meeting for her constituents. I'll not vote for her again.

Re: “"Martha McSally Is Not Answering"

According to the Congressional Budget Office, the regulations and economic incentives of Obamacare destroyed 3 million jobs. Very few districts suffered more as a result of that job stagnation than Congressional district #2.

Obamacare also put the entire nation at risk because it transferred responsibility for healthcare from business to government. The percentage of businesses providing healthcare coverage fell from 67% to 58% - a devastating burden that will have to be borne into perpetuity. And, it will get worse in the future.

In failing to pass these reforms, Republicans have put themselves at risk in the next election because the economy will not perform as well. In the end, it will be job creation that will determine their election prospects more so than health care.

On the day of their failure, the total US stock market fell a trillion dollars - a loss dwarfing the stakes involved directly in the debate.

The stock market is still up 2 trillion since election day but the margin of error is much lower now.

Re: “No Healthcare Vote Today After All

A number of years ago I was called to jury duty in an Arizona county most of you know. It was a murder trial. The defendent was accused of killing an older widow woman. It appeared he had a history of wooing, and scamming older widow ladies, and in his final episode he killed one, or so he was accused. I was in the jury pool with about 100 others. The judge and attorneys began asking the jury questions. There was a conference at the dais. The judge then announced they defendent was going to exercise his constitutional right to be his own representative. A noticeable groan went thru the potential jurors. I believe they all knew this was now going to take twice as long. In my own mind I knew he was going to be found guilty right there. Why? Because he was such a narcissist, he had been scamming old ladies for years with his self assured narcissism, he felt he could do it one more time. Luckily for me, I was excused. It was a six day trial, I followed it in the press. The jury was out two hours and found him guilty. The point of all this, is that a narcissist thinks he can BS anybody into anything, regardless of facts, process, , alternative interest groups, or reality. And he is truly shocked when his reality crumbles.

Re: “"Martha McSally Is Not Answering"

I got through to a human on Friday but all the aide really wanted was my name and address presumably so I can be on their mailing list in the future. That's okay; when I get the propaganda in the future I will remember that I didn't believe her previous mailings about how much she fights for women.

Re: “We Look Smaller in Boston

HumanBean, I usually don't add comments, but I want to correct an assumption you seem to have made. Your comment implies that the Boston schools replaced the Mercatur maps with the Peters projection. If you read the pull-out quote from the article, it states, "Teachers put contrasting maps of the world side by side and let the students study them."

Re: “Is Arizona Wasting Taxpayer Money When Drug Testing Welfare Recipients?

U Does anyone know the number that did not apply for welfare because they may of smoked weed , knew they would be tested so they didn't apply at all so these kids that already was poor an wondered where they would get their next meal from went hungry another day because the parents was scared to be tested .. Try using this money your wasting on testing an use it on treatment if for one reason or another drugs have pulled these families down to a point where they need help , Then offer them real help a treatment program while they get public assistance, not hand them drugs type of treatment , a Cold turkey stop counseling support an some real treatment with assistance. Only then can you say you helped these people kicking people to the curb because they use drugs don't help know one an eventually ends up costing in medical bills , jail an probation programs ,,

Re: “"Martha McSally Is Not Answering"

Since we live within her district, I have sent a couple emails to Rep. McSally and it seems as though they have fallen off the side of a cold, distant cliff. Hard to reach.

Re: “"Martha McSally Is Not Answering"

The dog caught the car. Now that they are in power, republicans have no idea what to do with healthcare.
Problem is, however, Obama Care does need major repair. Republicans and democrats need to find some affordable way forward. Won't see it soon. Sad.

Re: “"Martha McSally Is Not Answering"

Actually, the state of Arizona has an independent commission to redraw Congressional boundaries.

I do think you are missing my point, though. McSally WON her district, but it is a decidedly diverse district and not one that in recent history has been deep red OR deep blue. If you use the recent election as a poll (and probably the most comprehensive one you will find), then the majority of her constituents do not support Donald Trump. I think it is pretty clear that we didn't vote for her so she could rubber stamp Donald Trump, else he would have won in this district.

Now, obviously things aren't so simple. But I do think that anyone looking into a reelection committee ought to take this into account. Is it fair? Is it right? It doesn't matter. The NUMBERS say that she leads a district that is skeptical AT BEST about Trump and his policies. And with Trump's national trendline pointing downward, I doubt the trend differs here in CD2.

Re: “"Martha McSally Is Not Answering"

But voters also didn't cross party lines to elect the time of them. I was referencing the fact that Grijalva represented voters that did not support Obama. But this is now being brought about by gerrymandering and redrawing of lines. Something the framers also could not have seen coming.

Gerrymandering - Wikipedia
In the process of setting electoral districts, gerrymandering is a practice intended to establish a political advantage for a particular party or group by manipulating district boundaries.

So we are left with this. But it's a lot like those that say, Trump didn't win the popular vote so we should throw out the electoral college.

Those, are too desperate for an outcome. I trust the nation will survive.

Re: “"Martha McSally Is Not Answering"

Patrick D, except that in your analogy between Obama and Grijalva, voters didn't cross party lines to elect both of them. In civics classes, we are taught that the three branches of government are "co-equal," but there is a strong indication that the framers did not intend even THIS. The argument goes, that the framers actually mean the Legislative Branch to be the strongest of the three, with Executive then Judiciary after it.
