Re: “An Ethan Orr Supporter Sticks Up for His Candidate

Demitri, thank you for your intelligent comments. In typical left wing speak they try to condemn you for thinking for yourself and not ALWAYS following party lines. I became Ind. 3 years ago and I support Orr too. I'd also LOVE to see another Democrat run against Raul Grijalva so I can have some real representation in Congress.

Re: “Best Vegetarian/ Vegan

Always slow service and mediocre food. No where near Tucson, best breakfasts or vege cuisine. I have tried this place several times over 4 decades and it never fails to disappoint. Best breakfasts are at the Eclectic Café.

Re: “Ask a Mexican!

"like so many people who work in dangerous jobs no güero would accept" -- Bull! It's the low pay, not the danger guera. Talk to any one from the Ironworkers union about dangerous work. That's one of those unions decimated by the importation of illegals to work jobs for dirt cheap.

Re: “9 Things for Last Minute Voters to Know

Yes, and in answering that subpoena, you shared the MAS classes reminded you of a cult and you quoted a Bircher. That was also very profound. No one needed to compromise. But what the community needed was for someone to show true leadership--and frankly that is something you, Cuevas and Hicks failed. So, great job, and per usual, Mark, love your comments.

You would also have to get rid of your radio and most local web sites and email newsletters that include ads. It's a lot like trying to keep your house dust-free when you live on a dirt road. You have to work at it every day because there's more dust every day.

I agree Dave and a silly piece of paper shouldn't be what stands in the way.

Re: “An Ethan Orr Supporter Sticks Up for His Candidate

Did I read that correct? Mark Murphy stated, "Majority Leader Steele", does that mean the total sum of Ethan Orr's campaign of having him back in the Legislature is because he will be admitted into the room where the Republicans decide what to tear down next?

If Victoria Steele is the Majority Leader, a good pick by the way, Dr. Randy Friese is needed even more in the House. Wow, Mr. Murphy just destroyed Orr's argument for sending him back for another session of the Legislature.

It did make some sense to have a Republican from Tucson in the caucus room of the majority party. It just didn't seem Orr was respected enough from all segments of the Republican party or had demonstrated any sort of power within the Republican party up in Phoenix to do much good for us down here in Pima County.

The way Orr runs around Tucson pretending he's not part of that Republican legislative group, it is a wonder they allow him in their private meeting room. Representative Orr can't have it both ways, either he is in solid with the other Republican Legislators or he isn't.

The other daily newspaper that I happen to have delivered to my door every day says, vote for Orr, but now why? He's going to huff and puff to blow the brick wall he built down to get into a room with a minority party he and Governor Brewer succeeded in producing?

That really makes it easy, next Tuesday the two to vote for are Victoria Steele and Dr. Randy Friese in Legislative District 9.

Re: “MSNBC's Chris Hayes Reports on Southside Presbyterian and Sanctuary History

So if you don't agree with the law you brake it and if caught hide behind religion bunch of BS. The so called church and everybody helping should be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. These people were here for 4+ years, why didn't they apply for citizenship and learn English? Because of all the assholes helping them break the laws of the land they figure they don't have to. I don't give a rats ass where you come from, there's a right way and wrong way of doing things.

Re: “9 Things for Last Minute Voters to Know

Jim (for this seems to be a signed piece -- thanks for that), I am going to wade here into treacherous waters to respond to your comment: "You [Cuevas] and Stegeman, when you were leaders of the board, did such a poor job bringing the district and community together during a highly contentious time." I readily admit that I made some mistakes during the MAS period, some of which I've long since acknowledged and some that might come later, whenever the book on that episode is written. I recently listened to the tapes of a couple of the worst meetings and it was -- painful. But there is another side that is left out of most popular accounts, including yours. I did many things and published several opeds and went to many meetings with various stakeholders and put together a carefully crafted (though scorned by many) proposal to achieve some sort of compromise on that issue. (I give John Pedicone credit for mostly similar motivations and actions, though we had some disagreements and he made his own somewhat different set of mistakes.) One reason that this all failed is that the strongest MAS advocates, who drove much of what happened, were unwilling to consider any compromise on what they clearly considered to be a matter of principle. It is not my place to judge anyone, but refusal to budge even an inch is, to use your language, not a position likely to bring the district and community together. After May 2011 I had done everything I knew to do and stood aside (except for a subpoena I had to answer) as the train hit the wall. But up to that point I had tried hard to create some kind of viable middle ground.

Re: “An Ethan Orr Supporter Sticks Up for His Candidate

I suppose, since the Tucson Weekly is so desperate to show that they are politically balanced (see their ‘courageous’ recommendation for LD9!), the elevation of this comment is some sort of bone tossed to the Republican view. More likely this is the only person that’s supplied ANY reason to elect State Representative Orr. Since the GOP offered no combatant for either State Representative Victoria Steele or Senator Steve Farley’s seat, we can only assume that Orr’s survival is their last best hope for capturing the last three voters in Arizona who actually call themselves ‘Republican’ and ‘moderate.’ But let’s look at Mr. Dowling’s main argument . . . that Tucson needs a local, non-Tea Party Republican to front for us in the legislature. That assumes that the leadership of the AZ GOP will really listen to Orr on an issue that is contentious and that Orr will have the backbone to stand up to them and fight for it; however, the only time Orr has voted against his party leadership is when a Republican victory was not in jeopardy. He has, quite simply, shown NO appetite to fight for anything except his own position in the GOP as token rationalist. In point of fact, Mr. Dowling admits this sorry excuse for leadership by the GOP when he claims the difficulty of finding a ‘rational sponsor’ and posits Orr as our only choice! There’s another choice: flip the Legislature and get rid of the Republican leadership. After THAT, Majority Leader Steele and State Representative Friese will happily consider all those rational bills Mr. Dowling wants passed!

Re: “Tonight: Red Medicine and Our Sacred Maiz is Our Mother

The Spanish imported Black slaves to the New world at a rate 12 to 1 when compared to the North White Colonies, do you know that? The Mexicans drove out the Spanish who had raped and pillaged the native peoples, then proceeded to do the very same, as they had bounties on the Natives of the South West! Bounties for the scalps of native men, women, children and babies! MECHA pushes a myth AZTLAN (and has a charter calling for the removal of all non-brown people from AZTLAN) a myth I claim because the Mexicans only controlled the Southwest for less than 50-years before being defeated in war by the American Army or liberators, who then even though they won the war paid Mexico for "their" lost territories. Let's review the Spanish stole the land in the South West and sent the treasures of the natives back to Europe to fund their Renaissance, the Mexicans drove the Spanish out but continued the plundering and killing of the native peoples of the South West. The Americans then drove out the brutal Mexican Armies, bought the land and has now owned and controlled the land for over 150 years, three times the amount of time the Mexicans occupied the AZLAN. MeCHa is a KKK equivalent no one should be proud to be associated with, let alone invite to a public University anymore than the KKK should be welcomed! You can do it, I support your right to be racist but I cannot condone that racist group!
