Now another reason not to listen to the drone of jt harris(ment)
When Arizona elected officials go on national television they should be forced to proceed their remarks with a disclaimer. "I have abdicated responsible state government to right-wing extremists attempting to row their boat in a sea of sand without oars. I am not compelled to state facts just my own views and nothing more."
One day Arizona will wake up and find a closed door to an entire generation of young people who have been cheated out of a quality education. The political forces controlling state government and the Legislature have destroyed education by withholding funds in the name of school choice.
Our future, our children, are saddled with diminished incomes and narrowed career opportunities. Under realized educational opportunities will lead to slow economic growth. Employment will be constricted, and the quality of life will be diminished.
Those few who are lucky enough to further their educations will leave our colleges saddled with crushing student debt forced to leave the state for better paying employment leaving behind a weak job market.
Unless Arizona turns around and develops aggressive jobs programs and rebuilds the education system from K-12-Community College-University the lack of funding dooms future job opportunity. School choice, vouchers, tax credits and Disneyland fantasies of dual and triple public education systems need to be dropped. Let's work on one system of public education and concentrate on making it superior.
David gave you a fair offer, Wendy. Take him up on it. I too ran an elementary school with 600 students in it and I was the only administrator, responsible for 60 adults and their evaluations on an annual basis. My salary upon retirement was $57,000. Little different, isn't it? Paid by public money, just like yours.
Wait, I thought we sent troops to Afghanistan to help protect women from old men who wanted to control every aspect of their lives. Do we need Federal troops up in Phoenix?
How can they say that they are talking care of these animals! It's plain to see that all of the animals are in dire need of medical and hoof care. They have been taken from one abusers place to another, i don't understand any of this, please explain why this is ok.
These illegals should have been deported -- not detained. Its irrelevant that a policy group either 'feels' or speculates that an illegal is persecuted at some earlier time as a basis for eliciting a release.
David I have watched and READ your trashing of all elected republicans in the last few months. Including Douglas. How about some love for the Gov on dropping AIMS testing? He put the pubs on an even keel with charters and privates.
I need not remind you that the dems nor NEA ever accomplished that.
Great place with exquisit food!!
yes they can bslap, smoking is not a protected class. it is a health hazard to both the smoker and those around them. it affects productivity due to smoke breaks. i guess they can eliminate the breaks or insist smokers have to clock out to grab a butt. salaried employees have to enusre they're meeting their 8 hour requirement. and finally, their insurance rates should go up by a factor of 4. discrimante them into the ground.
Wow! Went there for the first time last night and was glad I did. A serving of lime-coconut for myself and a serving of vanilla chocolate mint for my daughter. Yum!!!
Wow CW13, isn't this priceless?
I am called " ignorant" by an obvious product of the TUSD education system.
Now Robin, go back and read your letter again and see how many mistakes you can find.
As for hiding behind a name, I just don't want you and your dream pod ending up on my front lawn.
I saw what happened to Scott Walker's elderly parents this week.
Those public employee unions are not gracious losers. Kind of like Tom after this last election.
Apparently larryd prisons are more important. How are people of modest means going to go to school?
Good-bye and good riddance to high-stakes tests, which never measured anything of value to begin with.
Wendy, I'm confused about your accusation that I used inflated numbers. Anyone can see the salary numbers on the 990 form submitted in 2012, Page 7 -- http://990s.foundationcenter.org/990_pdf_a… . I would be happy to use more current numbers, but the 2012 return is the most recent I could find on the internet. If the salaries of the three Millers have changed significantly since then, please let me know by providing me more recent 990s.
The 20 percent administrative cost comes from the financial report the school submitted to the state. On your FY 2014 report, page 7, it lists Administration Expenses of $765,118 and Total Expenses of $3,882,327. That comes to 19.7 percent, which I rounded up to 20 Percent.
If my numbers are incorrect, please explain where I made mistakes, with some evidence. I would be happy to correct my figures if they are in error.
That's all I said about the school: The salaries for you, your father and your mother, and the percent spent on administration. I made no comments about the quality of education at the school.
As for my Democratic buddies on the Board of Education -- I have no buddies there, past or present. Honestly, the only member I can name on present or past Board of Education (other than your father, and if I knew his name before it was brought up recently, I had forgotten it) is Mary Gifford, and that's because I did lots of research on K12 Inc. and its Arizona online charter, Arizona Virtual Academy. If you will tell me the name of the Democratic charter rep you mentioned who was on the Board, I'll do what I can to find similar figures about salaries and the percent his school spends on administration and put them on this comment thread.
Some day Southern Arizona will have to convince the rest of the State to vote for Democrats. Education is more important than ever yet many feel it's a private issue and not one for the population as a whole. I like to think that education is as important a right as food and water...and they are in short supply these days as well.
My favorite is the menacing music played during Channel 4s "investigation" reports.
just the color alone is depressing to go back a second time. PURPLE look what it did for princes carrer
Well “gcb1” ...I apologize that I am not a shady “reporter” but rather I am actually RUNNING an elementary school so it's pretty busy over here. As I stated in my comment, feel free to call the school. In fact, come by the school and see how hard all of the Millers, and the rest of our amazing team of educators, are working and how many wonderful things are happening for children. While we walk around, I would be happy to use that time to dispel this very one-sided opinion loaded with its' own non- transparent motives. I can also connect you to a lot of parents from the past 19 years this school has been serving kids that would be happy to share why this environment is special to them.
The “Wild West Has Lost Its Charms”, FYI - it is in the AZ Constitution that a charter operator sits on the State Board of Ed…which is an UNPAID volunteer position. Not a conflict of interest. The Board itself voted Mr. Miller to be President. What an honor! Obviously there are, in fact, a lot of people who trust in his educational leadership.
Again...anyone is welcome to visit Challenge Charter School (and enroll as we do follow open enrollment practices!), a Title 1 Rewards school meaning we are doing an above average job of helping the very subgroups Glass implies we are segregating. How can anyone find value in an article clearly so biased and malicious? And then speak to ignorance...?!
Growth of students from the bottom percentiles to the top percentiles is also how a school becomes a Blue Ribbon School which we are. There are only .002% of those in the Nation. We can’t fake that. They are selected by the US Department of Education, not behind closed doors at a "ShadowFaction" conspiracy meeting.
Based on the unjustified attacks on our character, isn't it interesting that I am the only one commenting here willing to do so using my own name?
Love this concept, good luck! I am rural and have chickens so all organic "waste" gets used as feed or compost, but when I visit people in town I am often uncomfortable with kitchen clean-up. "you throw that in the trash?" eek
Good going David -
You captured the atmosphere just right. My real concern is that all this comes at the expense of the kids. Here's the other thing that really stokes my flames - different subject, but same BS. When a state legislator/or family member has a vested-financial interest in Charter schools they should abstain from voting on any measure that strip dollars from traditional public schools and into the coffers of privately own charters. Wake Up ARIZONA! This foolishness, bordering on outright theivery is happening while our eyes are WIDE OPEN! www.ArizonaStandsUP.org
