Burnie muk stop being a spielferderber!
Uh-oh the old white chain gang is upset! Rita, I would stay out of Furr's and Chili's for a while, until this dies down.. At least during the early bird special hours.
Food Guy: I thought they would be by the time this came to print, but I called on Monday, incognito, and they were still stating they were open and accepting reservations.
Sam: I went back and reviewed my hand written notes, and sure enough it said Monsoons (in very poor penmanship) and I somehow transformed that to Mama L's when typing. I guess I am still getting used to the newbs in the T.O. camp! - Thanks for the correction.
scheppta: I am sure all the cities' restaurant turnover rates are similar, we just do an extraordinary job of covering it. Also, if you are unimpressed, either you are going to the wrong places, not paying attention or just Marco Pierre White.
Thanks for the lousy review. We are headed there tonight. I bet the food is great!
I never lived in any city that had more restaurants closing/failing than Tucson.
Really quite sad. On the other hand, since moving here 11 years ago, I have been generally
unimpressed with the overall restaurant experience here.
This viewer can be quite mean-sprited at time. Thinks
her reviews are the gospel.
I usually enjoy "Chow"; it's the only part of this rag that doesn't make my blood pressure rise.
Congratulations TW and Rita, you're now at 100 percent on the high blood pressure scale.
As an "old white guy", (who grew up on the southside in the 40's, 50's and 60's, had a step-mother from Mexico and a former wife who was Hispanic) I think I deserve a little more respect. Especially from people who, relatively speaking, just blew into town.
As to the "men in sombreros digging up Agave", who the hell do think harvests Agave so you can have your Tequila and Mescal, a bunch of "old white guys?"
So the food sucks, there are a lot of family-run Mexican restaurants that turn out garbage too. Tell us about the food and leave the left-wing politics out of it...oops, I forgot, this is the Tucson Weekly, never mind.
You knew what was going on here before you went, so por que? God forbid "old white people" were eating someplace, once again you knew the place before you even went in. I guess if there would have been a bunch of twenty somethings with fedoras on it would have been "cool". What a crappy article!
OH, a 'hear, hear' for Jack. Ugh. Gibson, get it together, man.
Five Points is fantastic. Just my opinion, but the TW writer is off base. This is the second TW review in the last eight weeks that seems way off base, actually. But, hey, just skip the restaurant reviews and read the always excellent Skinny and, of course, Red Meat, Random Shots and K. Rat. Beyond that....well. I used to love the Weekly.
The pizza throw down for the tucson originals will have Rocco's, Monsoon's Tap and Grill, Vero Amore, and Magpies. As well as desserts from Pastiche and Dante's Fire. Liabations from only local brews..
I don't know what's worse, the review or your bias.
V thai is closed. I walked by today and they were moving out everything. Can't say I'm sad.
Woah. Who knew people would be do defensive of this establishment? I have found restaurant reviews in the Weekly to be very consistent. Sorry folks. Food critics are good critics. They're paid to be particular and the complaints here were handled so gently I realized before reading the inane commentary how hip this place must be. Writer knows the audience and was basically apologetic for having not been wowed and still you all attack? Yikes. I for one can't stand when I can't get salt and pepper when I want it and am dining out. Decaf may not be popular but it was merely a warning. I like sandwiches I do in soup but this is good info for those who might not, now they know to request the soup adequately first. Seriously guys.
I happen to like the food at 5 Points. It's not a Michelin 3 star restaurant nor does it pretend to be. Could the food realistically be better. Yes. Is it good now. Yes. I like the staff, the service, and the ambiance. I also like the shop where I can get foods and sauces you won't find at Fry's or Safeway. Bottom line, when I'm in that neck of the woods, 5 Points is where I head for lunch. It's a no-brainer for me.
I don't understand the first post by Retardo.
One common thread...fat asses always want their fat ass filled for $4.
Please suggest a few. You'd be surprised they may have already been done.
There are a lot of restaurants in this metro area which you probably have never covered. Why not go to any of those and review them? Step out of your comfort zone!
Why do people think the reviewer is doing hatchet job whenever they criticize a restaurant? We're professionals and don't do that sort of thing. It's an observation and a restaurant should pay attention.
