You guys make it sound like it's the end of the world. This has been procedure for 80 years in AZ.

Re: “Media Watch

I stopped listening to KQTH when Bill White took over. When Andrew Lee was PD, my radio stayed on for hours at a time. The only time that I listen to KQTH now is from 9 p.m.-Midnight, weekdays. So sad that Jerry Doyle, Neal Boortz, et al are off the air. Such good comedy....gone.
Tucson doesn't really have a good radio station now. Top 40 gets too boring listening to a never ending loop of the same old songs. When I want music, I listen to last.fm where I have discovered artists that I never heard of. I just can't understand why their songs are not played on any stations.
What kind of label would one give to a station that wasn't defined by a format/style, i.e. hip hop, rock, latin, CW, etc.? Just play an assortment of good stuff, from any genre. Novel idea....no????

Re: “Media Watch

Then you get issues of Tucson Weekly when the Media Watch column is LAST week's column. Same thing this morning (1/22/15). No new radio, TV, newspaper, yard sale signs, NOTHING.

Re: “Vets Removed from Arizona's "Budget Balanced on the Backs of" List

There are two issues one of which the commenters have not yet picked up on. Whyinhell was there a $5 million dollar balance in the fund? Don't we have post-9/11 vets that need some of those funds? How 'bout the Wounded Warrior project that my wife and I contribute to - they seem to need money. Why is this sitting unused while an advisory board ponders? The point is that letting money sit in a fund like a red flag where the gov and legislature can sweep it is just asking for it,

Re: “To Pot or Not

Colorado expected a windfall from MJ taxes. They made money, yes, but not nearly what they expected. Why? They made the tax rate too high. When the taxes make the cost of the legal product too high, people will continue to use their old dealer.

Greed rarely pays, whether in government or the private sector.

Re: “To Pot or Not

I for one am completely against this proposed legislation. I will not support his bill or any candidate that votes for it. This is not freedom from governmental abuse but the formula for more and more and more. $50.00 an ounce TAX just where is this going to be collected at point of sale. If the tax can be raised and lowered at will by the ADHS depending on no table no barometer of cost or value I don't no like the distribution of revenue 10% for education how about 30% for study overseen by a University with at least 10 years established in peer review. If any copy write or intellectual properties come out of this is will belong to the citizens of the State of Arizona.

I do not see one thing in this proposed legislation that helps the Medical patient. I do not see standards put on ADHS on testing at the POS (point of sale) for smoke edibles and very VERY stiff fines and a bond of assurance filed after if product on shelf does not matched labeled percentages and since it is a consumable every piece of product need and has to be tested for accuracy.

I have read this new proposed legislation and for the user it gives away all the right of employment and representation that the current amendment 203 that is protecting the user today. They to scare the user by saying they are going to protect the possessor of 2 LBS or less for not having a felony only a misdemeanor WTF. What about the Medical user went gone here huh.

Lets look in the next 2 years between CO & WA things that don't get mentioned here. like the huge amounts of product that is sitting on shelves in both the decline and not even close to projected revenue collection as expected. Yes these fancy web pages writers paid for by Publicity agencies (attorneys) contributions to NORMAL and so forth. These are sheep in wolves clothing.

if This legislation goes I would propose a amendment that all product for sale has to go to a state clearing house and all dispensaries will have to buy product from them for standards and continuity of product. Anyone can grow whenever and wherever they proposed as long as security and environment are set they then need to sell all product to a clearing house. This will guarantee strain quality strength contaminants. No the appearance for impropriety and graft and manipulation is to much we need to go to a state clearing house. And for that matter I will give no support to the dispensaries for this kind of back handed Stalinist legislation.

Social safety nets are flowing from the Obama campaign machine. How many more handouts are necessary to destroy the middle class?

"many of the cronies of the now-deposed former superintendent are still ensconced in six-figure, do-nothing administrative jobs" Hmmm. is it possible that Tom would agree that Douceys plan to force 'administration costs' into the classroom just might be a good idea?

Re: “Boring Son

Boring Son??? Hold old is this reviewer? I can't take him seriously because his heading is such an obvious attempt at being clever/funny but he just comes across as a bitchy teenager. Show some professionalism when reviewing or at least run your headings by some more talented writers before posting.

Re: “Education Bills in the Lege (Which May or May Not See the Light of Day)

Thanks for this synopsis though I am confident the Democrats are more politically capable of working with others than you seem to be. There are a lot of good bills here though I thought parents were already allowed to opt out of sex ed.
I think if the amount is raised to $500 it should be conditional. Soon after this law was first implemented it was almost suspended because so much tax money was being sent to the schools. Depending on the needs of the treasury a limit could be set each year below the maximum amount.
And not a single dollar should go to the classroom simply because there should be no taxpayer money used in the private school classrooms.
At this time, ethnic studies is one of those bills intended to polarize the lawmakers more than advance a program. This is one that COULD jeopardize any hope of progress on other, more important legislation.
And, really, David; how can you take someone to task for being as acerbic as you are in your basic posting?

Re: “Vets Removed from Arizona's "Budget Balanced on the Backs of" List

I agree with GuiseppeKnows, David because he is more right. First it was "three hots & a cot" and ending with a flag draped coffin for that "last foxhole". The Phoenix vet's cemetery is beautiful in it's typically military spartan look but these things still take money. Let the vet's take umbrage and, no matter what, don't hate this governor on the backs of the veterans.

Re: “Dr. Word Asks: Ghoti Tacos, Anyone?

The work load of teachers would become vastly smaller if they did not have to keep correcting spelling mistakes which pupils commit only because English spelling is often illogical. More importantly, far more pupils than now would leave school better educated if they did not have to spend so much time on memorising quirky spellings for at least 4,219 common words (listed on my EnglishSpellingProblems blog). Irregular spellings like 'blue, shoe, flew, through, to, you, two, too' waste precious learning time which pupils at the lower end of the ability range could do more of for all subjects.

Worse still, many irregular spellings overlap and spell more than one sound, like the letter o (on – only, once, other, won, woman, women, womb). This ensures that many pupils take a very long time to learn to read too, with 1 in 5 never managing to do so properly. And nobody can learn much without learning to read first. English spelling incurs many costs which most people fail to consider. It is in dire need of some tidying up.
