Re: “Not Your Mama's Safety Pin: How a Household Item Can Change a Life

These refugees should stay, but Rosa definitely needs to go. I'll bet that these Syrian refugees will at least learn to speak English.

Re: “Diane Douglas on Testing and the Classrooms First Initiative Council

Thank you, David for this objective take on Diane Douglas. I, too, have been skeptical/critical/concerned and so forth about her tenure. But she did go on a listening tour and she has reached out to the community to learn our concerns. Unfortunately, I am afraid that she has "dulled her sword" by some of her antics and theatrics plus she is unqualified. I only wish she had the ear of the governor and that she had some credibility with him.
Keep it up!!

Re: “Marijuana Legalization Group Submits Initiative to Secretary of State's Office with More Than 250K Signatures

Please don't vote for this nonsense. Its a carrot on a stick. Or a bud on a stick... You know that stuff that's tied to a stick.

Cannabis should be legal because it never should have been illegal. It is not harmful like the substances they want to regulate and tax it as. Don't let the profiteers win this one.

Re: “Marijuana Legalization Group Submits Initiative to Secretary of State's Office with More Than 250K Signatures

So, here's what I find confusing. The CRMLA initiative would allow people to possess up to one ounce of marijuana. How would this affect AZ's current medical marijuana patients who are presently allowed to possess 2.5 ounces every two weeks? Would their ration be reduced? And how often would the CRMLA initiative allow consumers to purchase marijuana?

Re: “From Service to Homeless

Abby is a smart , generse person, at her age life should be about family and friends not finding a career and more. as a person thats disabled with years of edivance thas income is something that social security should have awarded her already like many others waiting 5 or 10 years, with lots of back up. On that subject no lawyears looking to help and social service providers under funded, overloaded with cases and not properly trained in all the way to help ,along with providers not always wanting to provide information that could help. Meanwhile the mayor has cut services, and I bet he never even met Abby or anyother person down on their luck if there wasnt a photop schedule. Mr. Rothschild really doesnt get it, doesnt try and got him into an office above his head. The mayor has proved himself a slave of the banking, military and non profit industrial complex. he is not the guy for the job.

Re: “Apparently These People Think It's a Good Idea to Bring Dolphins to Arizona for Entertainment Purposes

Not just unhealthy for the dolphins, but a really stupid idea where human safety is concerned. Dolphins are beautiful, but they are best observed from a distance; they're heavier than humans, stronger than humans, and can be pretty aggressive. They're not all squeaks and cuddles. Those signature bottlenose snouts? Yeah, they ram and kill large sharks with them. Instances where dolphins forced to swim with humans have gotten hacked off and seriously injured someone have been well-documented. Didn't the people who dreamed up this idea ever watch that "Return to La Grunta" episode of "King of the Hill"?

Re: “Marijuana Legalization Group Submits Initiative to Secretary of State's Office with More Than 250K Signatures

This proposition defines marijuana as all parts of the plant; leafs, stems, seed, flowers, etc.

It limits possession of Marijuana to 1 ounce.

You better hope those 6 plants it allows you to grow are small because the second the stems and leaves add up to more than 1 ounce you are breaking the law.

It was explicitly written this way because it's authors are going to directly benefit from retail sales and people growing at home is a threat to their profits.

I am not sure how to vote on this fucked up bill....

Re: “Diane Douglas on Testing and the Classrooms First Initiative Council

A note to On the left? Really? I'd be interested in seeing what you find misogynist in what I've written about Douglas since she was elected. I think you'll find I have been pleasantly surprised, as I said in this post, at how much I agree with what she has said and done. My surprise hasn't been because she's a woman but because of her right wing beliefs which I feared would be detrimental to Arizona education.

Likewise, you might check back to see what I've written about standardized testing. You can look, for example, at the week I devoted to writing about the opt out movement across the country. I've written a number of posts about problems with high stakes, standardized testing.

The Range has a reasonably robust search engine. Type in a few search terms along with my name and see what you find.

Re: “Diane Douglas on Testing and the Classrooms First Initiative Council

Thanks for reporting on the meeting. It's good that Douglas continues to show signs that she understands what's going on in Phoenix, and good that you have at least temporarily stopped writing about her in ways that bring to mind the ongoing influence of misogyny in the way some of our supposedly "progressive" male commenters write and speak about women in politics.

I disagree, though, that you are on the political left -- seems to me that you are in the political pocket of elected officials who are about as authentically "left" as the porcine contingent in Animal Farm -- but you will no doubt continue to assert that you are on the left just as the officials you support continue to assert it, depending as they do on sizable enough portions of the electorate being ignorant enough of their voting records and actions in office to enable key figures to continue -- amazingly, disgustingly -- to get re-elected.

Ditto on your status as an anti-testing activist. Prove it through your record in influencing policy during the last three years. Your friends in office have been responsible for some very bad behavior in this department and you have -- what a surprise -- remained silent.

Re: “Ed Superintendent Douglas Talking in Tucson Tuesday, Wednesday

How are they "saving lots of education money" when we are paying them with tax credits and other state money? They're not saving us anything and they're failing to educate and socialize children well.

Remove a few layers of administration from the public schools, pay teachers well enough to attract and retain more talented people, maybe even make school year-round (shown to very effective), provide up-to-date technology and materials to every school, and feed the children who come to school hungry (I think it's 25% here). Then, watch the students shine!
(fyi, I have no kids in schools here; I just think all kids, everyone's kids, should have a good education and enough to eat)
