WE get these in Northern Arizona as well. Took some nice photos this morning of one filling in a tarantula burrow
luvallmykids , I know about the unionization efforts at CAVA, but I don't know about any specific union-busting efforts by K12 Inc. If you know more, please let me know, either in the comments section or by contacting me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Hey! This is just what the US needs - more high fat food to cram in. Aren't there enough people who do NOT need this type of food? Is this subsidized by the local cardiologists and EMS services?
These outside experts only validated what we as "ex" employees of the DOC have been saying all along. We don't carry the same credibility as them thus we are ignored but sooner or later, the truth shall be disclosed and exposed inside the courtrooms. I don't understand why it takes an outsiders visit and examination to bring changes when AZ has the same "experts" who are retired and still very in touch with the happenings within. Crazy how this works but whatever it takes to make changes I guess. Must be cultural thing that former employees are not worth the time to listen to when they speak about these prison conditions. Too bad, there are a lot of great retired people who could contribute so much if the political barriers weren't so cruel and ostracizing.
Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to comment on the original story. After reading it, however, it appears the author needs to improve his writing and reasoning skills, at the very least. The arguments he uses and the structure of his writing weaken his points. For example, he cites a statistic that says the National Institute of Justice says one in five women will be sexually assaulted, then he immediately mentions drinking -- though the study never made any such conclusions.
Another example of weak support for his argument is in the following paragraph when he says, "College is full of being vulnerable around strangers. When stated like that, it seems like something you’d want to avoid, no?" If the author is so keen to avoid feeling vulnerable around strangers, then perhaps he should not attend a public university with 30,000-plus students from all over the world. And, if he is so keen to avoid feeling vulnerable around strangers, he should probably never do something crazy like join the Peace Corps, or the military, or travel outside his home country, or probably just go anywhere where there are people he doesn't know who are different from him. But for most people, feeling vulnerable around strangers is part of having new experiences and getting out of their comfort zone. It's how we grow as people.
Now, I'm not arguing the author's points (though I'm also not saying I agree with him), but I am saying that if he could learn to write better and present his arguments with better evidence, then perhaps the backlash wouldn't be so great. I agree that in a strong debate, unpopular opinions should be heard. But when the opinions are unpopular, it is perhaps even MORE important that they are supported with real evidence and not drawn as conclusions with no real evidence.

Sorry David. You can't seem to check your biases at the door. TUSD has become a political punching bag and they have beaten all the money out of the taxpayers. Like it or not.
P.S. I'm not running for any office. I would prefer TUSD close.
You can thank Obama...and yourselves.
All the Republicans needed to win another election is to give a Democrat a chance to lead.
What a mess he has created. Next time try to find somebody with some experience. Unlike Hillary. She owns this middle eastern mess along with BHO. It's theirs.
All of the comments in this thread point to the reasons why both incumbent Board members need to be voted out in the coming election. Most other Pima County school boards operate in a functional and harmonious way because they are not populated by agenda-driven politicians who push their own political interests. The Grijlava camp on the TUSD Board wars with the Stegeman camp constantly. Neither one of these "leaders" are consensus-builders who can rally the community together because they continually demonize those who don't agree with them. Stegeman is just more open and transparent about his efforts to influence the electorate in this campaign. He has been aided by Bruce Ash, the Republican national committeeman, who uses his radio spots to bash Grijalva and her allies. Grijalva is more subtle and under the radar in her machinations, but active Democrats are well aware of how her supporters are trying to determine the outcome of this election, even to the point of discrediting fellow Democrats who are on the ballot.
As for Sanchez, he reaps the benefits from all this bickering on the Board as he and his colleagues operate with impunity and no accountability. Previous commenters have already noted the large number of administrators and teachers who have fled TUSD during the less than two years that Sanchez has been in charge. He is intolerant of discussion or dissent and quickly moves to punish or silence anyone who questions his rule, often using his high-spirited and vengeful deputy superintendent to be his enforcer. If people in this community were appalled with how Isquierdo ran things in SUSD, wait until the way Sanchez operates is made more public.
What is needed on the Board is a commitment to hold Sanchez accountable for his excesses and to support him in his efforts to put a long-term strategic plan in place for TUSD. Both of the incumbents in this election, Hicks and Grijalva, lack the credibility and ability to play these dual roles given their track records up to now. TUSD voters need to elect independent and selfless Board members who will avoid the temptation to add to the factionalized nature of most recent TUSD Boards.
Dr. Stegeman, isn't financially supporting another sitting member on the board, and someone who could potentially be sitting on the board, a serious conflict of interest? Were there any discussions with the candidates you have chosen to support financially before you donated to their campaigns and what kind of support you would receive in return? Aren't you basically attempting to purchase votes from your fellow board members?
For someone who has been so concerned about addressing conflicts of interest and disclosing them to the public, this seems hypocritical. You never made a single mention of it in your constituent newsletter (something your constituents might want to know in case they want to choose to no longer be your constituents). If Safier hadn't written anything about it this probably would have never become public information. That's pretty suspect.
It's pretty gosh-darned amusing to see a Canadian marketing a throughly Canadian food item to Americans under the name "US Fries". Would that be related to "Freedom Fries"? Is this a cynical marketing tactic? Is poutine Canadian? Is Stephen Harper a right-wing a-hole? All these questions have the same answer. Actually, in Canada poutine is heavily identified with Quebec, its province of origin. As any loyal Canuck knows, especially those from the lower socioeconomic orders, the true national dish of Canada is and always has been Kraft Dinner, salvation of that country's poor (especially single male university students). Compared to KD (traditionally eaten straight from the saucepan with a spoon while reclining on the couch watching TV), poutine's just a jumped-up johnny-come-lately.
"Pickering left the industry altogether to pursue other opportunities after completing his MBA from the UA."
I'm sure the fact the he didn't get Chuck George's position at KOLD or Rob Guarino's position at KVOA had NOTHING to do with Pickering's decision to leave.
California has a K12 school named CAVA. The teachers got together kast year to form a union. PERB the public relations board confirmed that they had a majority support. Now the k12 managed school has hired high profile union busting legal firm to work against the formal recognition. Teachers concern have been validated. You should look into this. It is illegal for a for profit organization to run a public charter school. more than 50% of the ADA funds they receive from the state of california are going to k12 for profit in Virgina.
choose to do stupid and nasty things like this,, you waste EVERY ONES time
To Francis Saitta and Betts Putnam Hidalgo: I know and appreciate that you are both candidates running in this election, but it would be more transparent if you said you were a candidate at least once in each thread where you are commenting. People need to know you are not a completely disinterested party when they read your comments. I don't know how anyone else feels about this, but I respect candidates who go the extra mile to be transparent.
President Obama believes that those who violate our laws on a daily basis should feel comfortable and safe, rather be fearful of being detained and deported. Who does he represent, the criminal or the taxpayer victims? Outside of breaking the law in the first place, large numbers commit crimes once arriving here. A multitude of illegal alien drunk drivers, mow down innocent Americans on our highways. The hundreds of thousands incarcerated within our prison system, which I suggest should be isolated on an island, not dissimilar to Australia’s Christmas Island compound? Why shouldn’t foreign nationals breaking our laws be looking over their shoulder, staying in the shadows, NOT admit they are criminals by applying for driver’s licenses. What happens in the future when honest government is back and those DMV records are used to prove they are here illegally—and they signed a document to admit it.
Once the Senate and House is back in the hands of an ethical and I hope a less corrupted government, taxpayers should demand that ALL illegal aliens legitimized by Obamas inept associates that ALL his executive orders are reversed and the data bases for illegally-sponsored drivers licensing, federal IRS special ITIN tax refund numbers are checked and state agencies, who conspired against the Rule of Law held accountable. Even Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) who refused to investigate Child Tax Credits, given the parents illegal aliens of over a. 4 Billion of dollars in reimbursements
“Obama said that in the “absence of congressional action,” he intends to “take action” to increase resources on the border, upgrade “how we process these cases and that we find a way to encourage legal immigration and give people some path so they can start paying taxes, pay a fine, and learn English.” He asserted that it is important that they not have to “look over their shoulder but be legal since they’ve been living here for quite some time.” If these so called penalties are anything like the lax processing after the 1986 Amnesty, then we really in serious trouble.
What part of illegal does this former attorney not understand? Is this corrupt administration going to secretly use the reorganization of ACORN to register--alive or dead people—felons, illegal aliens to vote in the midterms. Are the Liberal progressives going to bus their crowds from another county or a close state to vote illegally?
According to Texas rancher Cuban “Rusty” Monsees, Mexican drug cartel members are wreaking havoc on the ranches near the border and using death threats and textbook intimidation to drive ranchers off their land. Read the whole story on www.teaparty.org
In an interview with Oathkeepers, Monsees revealed:
“We get kids. We get adults. The cartel is bringing across, importing people from as far away as the Mediterranean. I’ve talked to agents and they picked up some characters from Somalia, Iran, Iraq, Syria… anything that you can think of these agents has to deal with.”
It gets worse: in the same in interview, Rob, an Oathkeeper who has come to help protect Rusty and his ranch from the invaders, claimed that Border Patrol has captured wanted terrorists, but have been unable to release that information to the vulnerable public. Rob explained,
“[They] had six Middle Eastern males on Rusty’s property [which Border Patrol was able to catch] … all I know is they were Muslim. I wasn’t told a whole lot of information about it. I do know they had told me they had caught eleven of the same group, the week prior to that, that had been on our United States terrorist wanted list [for acts against the United States] – not watch, but wanted list. And this is the kind of stuff that they are not releasing to the public; they’re not allowed to release it.”
“They were caught and they were turned over to Homeland Security, and everything pretty much disappeared like what Rusty was saying. None of that is any public information or anything like that, so they don’t want it to be public. [The BP is not allowed to tell anyone that known terrorists are coming across the border]. They aren’t allowed to speak about it. The only thing we [the American public] hear about is women and kids… and when they make huge drug busts, which are what we hear about. We don’t hear about the gang-bangers coming across, we don’t hear about the terrorists coming across. We don’t hear about the violence going down on the border. I had a rancher call me last week, and begging for help on 15,000 acres. He had been moved off his ranch because he doesn’t feel safe with his family there. He’s been shot at and threatened. We don’t hear that [on the news].”
MOST DOMINANT ISSUE BEING AVOIDED: Refresh the 700 mile, 2006 Secure Fence Act and build the double layer fencing, complete with concertina razor wire. Hundreds of miles are vacant of any barrier. It was killed by prior Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas by adding a non-escapable amendment to the 2006 bill. Whereas giving complete control to Homeland Security, ruling out any funds to deliver the 700 miles of two fences, separated by an all weather track way. An in between no-mans land where illegal aliens would be caught and detained for immediate deportation. No wonder we are being invaded, without little or no deterrent. Enforcement Laws of US Border Patrol has been restrained by Obamas orders.
1) Secure our borders.
2) End amnesties.
3) Mandate E-Verify Or a National ID card
4) Abolish rewards for illegal aliens.
5) Toughen interior enforcement.
6) Amend birthright citizenship.
7) Conclude chain migration.
8) Purge refugee and visa fraud.
9) Eliminate unnecessary worker visas.
10) Remove visa lottery.
11) End visa overstays
All we have seen from this present Administration is laws being intentionally disregarded, undermined that have been the identified with the Rule of Law, our sovereignty and the US. What we have suffered under Obama is Constitution upheaval. Comprehensive Reform--Amnesty...IRS abuses...Obamacare...gun-grabbing...open borders...deliberate bypassing of Congress...Benghazi...fast and furious weapons to Mexico—cutting back on our military and the failure of National Security. America is a free country and we must fight back against these overreaching agencies. In California Governor Jerry Brown stated nearly 30% of CA Kids Illegal or ‘Don’t Speak English’
IF YOU ARE ANXIOUS ABOUT YOUR COUNTRY UNDER OBAMA IMPERIAL RULE AND HIS PAWNS check this site that has the phone Numbers and Mailing Addresses of Members of Congress at: www.contactingthecongress/ to stipulate an end to illegal immigration, the dismantling of our laws, sovereignty, citizen rights and even our military is being cut back, which we frantically need for protection against our enemies foreign an domestic. Illegal Immigration is rapidly becoming the top precedence for Americans, because they see its impact on the barren economy and lost jobs. Large corporations and big business are laying-off birthright, naturalized citizens and green card holders, making an avenue for lower paid illegal aliens. This is the number for the central switchboard for every member of Congress to address your objections at 800-224-3121.
Don't know where to comment. Has Tucson done anything lately about the awful condition of the city streets? So many need repaving and there is no money? Don't you know the home values go up when the streets look nice? And there is less crime. Keep it neat, people.
obama will do what's best for obama when it's time for obama. And, the decision will come down when he's ready, not before. The prez is tone deaf. Once you realize that, the rest is easy, then you will stop yelling at your TVs
When I worked at Evergreen Air Center at Marana in the late 70's and early 80's, I gained a lot of inside knowledge about the connections of that national company and their sub-contracting work for the CIA. I approached Chuck Bowden's City Magazine and contributed a story on my experience there. The two of us, plus another man from his magazine, who has since died of cancer all lunched, ran through the piece and discussed publishing it. I was in awe of his writing, reputation and lack of guile. I learned a lot from that experience. It published and they got a lot of feedback. Later, I wrote a 5 part series for the Star, and brushed up against Chuck who was in the building. His writing was so inspiring his columns were collectible. I still have a lot of them in my files. His television appearances were brave, when talking about drugs and the Mexican police being interconnected. His early piece on a Mafia chieftain's funeral here in Tucson I thought was a watershed experience in his writing.
