One Man's opinion. I enjoy Fortunato's. Great subs, meat and cheeses always fresh. Great pasta and potato salad. You want Lasagna, try and Italian restaurant.
My favorite deli shop in town is Dickman's. Great peppered jerky and of course you have to get an "ugly" steak for Sunday football.
Totally agree. We moved to the area about a month ago, and we've been making the restaurant rounds. We stopped here last week, and was very disappointed. We were hoping for something similar to Defalcos in Phoenix, not even close.the meet all sub tasted liked boiled ground beef with no seasoning. The potatoe salad tasted like Safeway deli salad. The cannoli was ok, but I've had better.
I agree with Joshua, Tony's is great. Real food made to order. Their Ruben is to die for.
give tonys italian deli on 22nd a try. I travel out east to get food from them it's so good.
The Hungry Fox is a great place to eat although I don't eat there as often since Marlene sold the place. I used to eat there every day in the 80s when the Hilmars owned it and both of my children used to work there. My son was a dishwasher there for almost five years till he got out of school and my daughter was a hostess until she went off to college. It no noisier than most other places in Tucson because everywhere you go, you have retirees as they are the heart and soul of the city. They can be annoying but you came to eat, not worry about everyone else.
The volume of a sandwich or dish vs. its price became an issue when the first restaurant or pub opened for business, Flapster-the article said nothing about volume affecting taste. And if I shell out near $40 for a breakfast for two, you can bet I'd cast a jaded eye on miniscule portions at that price point! I, for one, thank the writer for the heads-up to Tucson diners.
Tried it yesterday and the ice cream is wonderful! My wife and I will be back.

I have never really been one to order meat loaf when there is salmon and steak on the menu. But one night at Cushing Street I was feeling adventurous and MAN - I kid you not - the absolute BEST meat loaf of all time! NOT to be missed! They drizzle it in a maple glaze and it is wonderful. I love this place.
This place looks very tempting to me in more ways than one.
This place is owned by a friend of a friend and I have eaten there many times. It seems to suffer from a Jekyll and Hyde sort of syndrome, when it's good, it's really good and when it's bad it's really bad. I was there the morning when the owner was testing the breakfast pizza. He went around to every table and gave us all a taste. That's how you sell a new item! I don't know if it's still on the menu, but ask for the chicken-fried bacon, you won't regret it. The service has been kind of hit or miss as well, but the employee turnover seems to be kinda high, maybe once they have a longer tenured staff thing will get better.
The only thing I don't like about these places is that they are full of retired people (I'm retired) who have to push three tables together and "hold court" every morning, making a bunch of noise, howling and laughing four times louder than they have to. It's annoying as hell.
My husband and I go there almost every Saturday night for dinner and to listen to the JAZZ. Now that they've added music on Friday night we've added that to our weekend entertainment. Cushing's food is consistently good and the staff are attentive and friendly. This is my favorite spot for food and entertainment in Tucson.
A very enjoyable Tucson "standard." I respectfully don't think "classic" is the right word to describe the place. BUT, my issue is they stopped serving lunch a few years back much to Tucson's loss. With everyone talking or at least writing about the up swing in the downtown Tucson scene maybe it is time to bring back lunch.
And the bleu cheese grits are great!
Was at Cushing Street the first night it opened - have much enjoyed it over the years when the Rollings family was running the place, as they are currently.
Just ate there last night---desserts to die for!
My wife & I "rediscovered" Cushing St. a few months back and have dined there several times since (and will again this Saturday). We agree the salmon is excellent.
