Re: “HighWire Lounge to Bring Molecular Mixology to Downtown Tucson

Lol this place is short of a horror story, ordered a drink and it was disgusting told the bartender and within minutes my whole group was told to leave. Most had not even had a sip and we still had to pay for them. Wow, truly amazing, not only it reeks of stale beer but they are bullies.

Re: “More Thoughts on Harper Lee's Two Versions of Racism in America

Good, thoughtful write-up. There's always been something about Mockingbird that seemed off to me. Much too tidy.
Rick Spanier, your last point about childhood heros is one that I agree with so strongly and try to make whenever possible. People are not heros, by and large. They can do incredibly heroic things, but elevating individuals to 'hero' status is glossing over their inherent humanity. I'm glad Watchman came out, even under possibly dubious circumstances.

Re: “More Thoughts on Harper Lee's Two Versions of Racism in America

Atticus Finch, either version, was not so much different than our most beloved founding fathers and later "champions" of racial equality. Washington and Jefferson were both slave owning landed gentry. Both recognized slavery as a stain on the emerging nation but elected to kick that can down the road rather than reconcile their belief and maundering lack of statesmanship, Nearly a hundred years later Lincoln also preferred to delay abolition until pressed to the wall as the US spread westward. Nearly a hundred years after Lincoln, Lyndon Johnson waffled on the Voting Rights Act until he also caved in to pressure from the same groups Atticus resents in Watchman.

Racism is as much a part of our national DNA as violence. We choose to go slowly, take our time, kick the can down the road; as our armies wreak havoc across the globe, our police run amok in inner cities and any lunatic can choose the most effective type of gun necessary to shoot up a political gathering, an elementary school, a movie theater or a church. Reading and analyzing Lee's two novels tell us, more than anything else, nothing has really changed and our childhood heroes are simply flawed humans.

Re: “Another Good Thing

David W it actually stopped working long before that. Brit Hume former anchor person ABC News said today this is just how the Clintons work. They lie, they deceive and they obfuscate. It's worked for them for years, but Americans are tired of it.

Re: “Another Good Thing

Save the old "mean spirited" mantra. That stopped working after Hillary Clinton covered up the murdered Americans in Benghazi. her "vast" right wing conspiracy turned out to be her own incompetence.

Re: “Zona Politics: Bernie Sanders Speaks! Plus: Ash and Rogers Talk Sanders, Trump, Planned Parenthood & More!

As I recall, organ harvesting is illegal. If evidence of an organization breaking the law comes to the attention of the government, I think it is obligated to investigate. There are pretty well substantiated allegations ( videos of organization officials haggling over prices of ay organs) that PP is harvesting organs. These people may think that they are on a mission from God, but they can't break the law fulfilling it.

Re: “Harper Lee's Two Versions of Racism in America

Eliminate the hate; any and all and the problem of racism will be relegated to history books written in two or more languages. This new volume is important because of the era in which it takes place. The most I remember of the tme is the upper tier in the movie theater and the homogenous make up of the other vacationers at Myrtle Beach in the '50s & '60s. My Grandparents were not racists though they were in the upper middle class of their society and employed Black women and one man for periodic yard work.
I suppose my greatest impression aside from the theater was upon my Grandfather's death. Their were two viewings, one for the whites and one for everyone else. I will never forget the genuineness of those Black adults who were so openly emotional. That experience coupled with JFKs inaugeral address, MLKs speech at the Lincoln Memorial and the violence against those doing voter registration defined myself and millions of other white teens of the time.
The current issues are nothing like those of fifty years ago because I don't believe ANY protester today is willing to make the same sacrifice as those before them have. Hopefully it won't come to that.

Re: “Zona Politics: Bernie Sanders Speaks! Plus: Ash and Rogers Talk Sanders, Trump, Planned Parenthood & More!

Before they knew they were selling fetal tissue at what may be a profit. It's called law breaking. Why doesn't PP take federal money to promote giving birth as well? Churches don't exist to make up for selfish decisions.

Re: “Zona Politics: Bernie Sanders Speaks! Plus: Ash and Rogers Talk Sanders, Trump, Planned Parenthood & More!

I tell people all the time that first of all PP does so much education regarding avoiding unwanted pregnancy that it is a lie that their purpose is abortion. 2% of what they do is abortion AFTER exploring alternatives. Even Ducey said right after he took office when more money was needed for children.. Okay churches you don't like abortion then you better step up and help these kids. Of course that didn't happen. So Repubs say PP is bad but won't help parents with children they cannot afford . Also selling tissues is legal and Repubs voted for it too. They are hypocrites now. David W check your facts. They voted for it to help with PP costs.

So one woman equals how many children? Controlling women? Stop making excuses, this is coming to an end.

You don't harvest organs to keep other alive from a healthy fetus and call it life saving. Hypocrites? Once again you are what you accuse others of.

Planned Parenthood saves women's lives EVERY day.

Hypocrites worry about embryos and controlling women, and then vote to harm living children by voting down health, education and other social programs.

Re: “Is Arizona Wasting Taxpayer Money When Drug Testing Welfare Recipients?

Many people (including myself) were randomly and periodically drug tested as a condition of employment. If it's OK to test people who have to work for their money, it's wrong to test people who don't? And they only tested people who admitted they had used drugs recently? Seriously? If you can afford to buy illegal drugs, you don't need welfare.

Re: “Another Good Thing

Greece has been on austerity programs for years and years. It does not work. No evidence that keeping people poor helps the economy and some evidence that raising the minimum wage benefits the economy. Support is growing in Europe to support Greece by sending basic human needs. They have struggled for so long, they need everything.

Our poor(meaning AZ) have many with 2 people in the households making minimum wage and cannot get ahead. Of course there are poorer people than they are with single people making only that and some with children. It is not reasonable to believe that someday they will be able to pull themselves up because school is not even affordable. Smart states like Tennessee have now made community college free because they no longer have enough skilled labor. Smart Tennessee. Too bad they had to get their economy in such bad shape(to not have the needed employees because they are untrained) to offer free education.…

So we need to consider raising minimum wage because there is some evidence that it is helping in certain states. The jury is still out on many states ... not enough evidence it is helping. However, from what I can find there is no evidence that it is hurting the states- only projections by naysayers(Republicans).

And we need to making education affordable. Two very good choices which our state does not do. Again, look at Greece. For that matter, look at Arizona!!! As you know, Arizona has been under Republican leadership since the early 1980s Napolitano had a red congress), and we are massively in debt.

Hmmm....... something about many of the posts so far cannot be true because of the evidence of their thinking( no raising of minimum wage and in the past supporting the raising of the cost of education) in Arizona.

Re: “Another Good Thing

I don't see how this helps keep tuition down. I thought your concern was kids not being able to afford college and then being saddled with debt. Who is going to pay for this?

Re: “Another Good Thing

Did it ever occur to any of you incredibly mean spirited folks that without workers consumption--i.e.we all need to be able to BUY things--the whole economic system caves in?production is for consumption and a handfull of people, even incredibly greedy ones, can't consume enough to keep the system running.

Let's hope reason and morality prevails and PP is disbanded forever. We don't need a culture of death.

If you think everyone in this country is paid what they're due you're a damn fool. Hey let's keep paying CEOs and useless celebrities ridiculous amounts while the people doing the grunt work scrape by.
