Re: “TUSD Superintendent Firing Update: Nothing To See Here, Folks (For Now).

Were you at the Board meeting where they voted to award a $21 million contract to ESI, a manager of outsourced labor, "Sun Riser"?

What did that agenda item and vote mean? It meant already underpaid, long-suffering long-term subs, working one of the most difficult jobs people do locally -- walking into classrooms full of kids you don't know and trying to deliver something resembling "instruction" in very challenging circumstances -- had their wages reduced and their ability to qualify for benefits destroyed. Why? So that the district could off-load the tremendous management problem it had created for itself when their newly recruited, inexperienced 30-something-year-old Superintendent redistributed Title 1 money to reduce class sizes. This redistribution of federal funds meant to benefit poor students had the effect of creating a lot of impossible-to-fill positions in schools on the west and south sides serving primarily low income families. Long term subs, who in most cases don't have teaching certification, had to fill those positions. And then their labor was outsourced. And then an executive in the company to which the labor was outsourced gave two $5,000 donations to TUSD Board members running for re-election who had voted in support of the awarding of the $21 million contract. And no donation to the TUSD Board member running for re-election who had NOT voted in support of awarding that contract.

These are the sorts of things that can be observed in and around TUSD Board meetings if you are well informed and have done your homework, and if you are not distracted by the student mariachi bands and other BS that is trotted out in every meeting, specifically to entertain and mislead people who DO NOT do their homework.

I haven't read any commenters here that give me the impression they "want to hurt somebody," but I have read many commenters who give me the impression that they want this toxic, dysfunctional district to stop hurting its poor and minority students.

Re: “What's Behind Tucson's International Wildlife Museum?

We teach our kids to be kind, loving beings from birth. We teach by providing a loving pet to grow with our children and encourage them on how to nuture and care for their pet. Then, when our children realize that there are people out there killing beautiful animals that simply are trying to survive in a vicious world, it's hard for them to comprehend the difference. Hell, it's hard for adults to comprehend the difference. We Americans criticize other nations for their barbaric killing and eating of dogs, cats, every kind of sea life and on and on but we slaughter animals simply for fun or thrills. It's a sickness to deliberately want to kill for the sake of killing. Now, there is a calling for those type of killing fools and it's called WAR. The people that like to kill should be the ones in the military for war. That way they can hunt to their hearts content, but they will also be hunted. Makes it more interesting. I call hunters with high powered rifles and tree stands and dogs and baiting a bunch of gutless weasels. Wish animals could arm themselves. I'd be the first to provide the weapons.

Re: “TUSD Board Meeting Scheduled For Tuesday, Feb. 21. Only One Item on the Agenda

It's the ignorant who support keeping Sanchez in place just for the sake of continuity. The policy and funding allocation disasters of the last three years discussed in detail above make it clear to anyone who understands progressive education policy that what we've got here is someone in the driver's seat in this district who is undermining not just the proper functioning of a district serving tens of thousands of students, many of them disadvantaged, but the legitimacy of the broader cause of progressive federal education policy.

It could well be asked, and has been asked by many who understand the policy issues: how can we lobby for federal education dollars like Title 1 funds -- or for tax levies like desegregation supplements -- when this is what happens to them when they reach Southern Arizona? We need to be able to make a clear and well-documented case that the funds are being applied to provide significant benefit to the targeted populations. If there is no evidence of that kind -- and much evidence to the contrary -- we have no legitimate basis for saying to the "privatizers," "Poor students do not need to get out of these schools. They are being well served in public district schools, and here is copious evidence to document all the good that has been done with Title 1 and desegregation funds."

Is it really impossible to get a chief administrator in place who understands this? If so, then the privatizers have already won. Fold up your tent, "supporters of public education," and go home.

They have posted under a host of other names, yet you brown nose them.

Thank the Lord that you don't have your nose up my rear.

Re: “TUSD Sideshow

More about El Jefe Raul and his plans for your children in TUSD.

His young adulthood coincided with the peak of El Movimiento, the Chicano civil-rights movement that imbued him with what he later described as anger over how his public-school education had made [me] feel I wanted to be an Anglo.

During this period, Grijalva wrote for the Movimiento newspaper Coraje!a Spanish word meaning both Courage and Angerwhose front page bore the image of a clenched-fisted Chicano saying My race first and the motto Better to die on your feet than live on your knees. In 1969 Grijalva contributed to this publication a poem condemning white racism's clammy hand of hate.

My thanks to George S for the link!

Wait a second, he was never respectful and not racist.

He has said he is a Christian, but you can tell he's using that as a veil for his racism.

True Christians cringe at everything he decides to post.

Re: “TUSD Superintendent Firing Update: Nothing To See Here, Folks (For Now).

I have been to a few school board meetings and heard them discuss agenda items that had actual little kids and educational programs under careful discussion: just a boring but productive recollection that has no relevant connection with the current reality. Some commenters here write like they want to hurt somebody, at the least.

Deja vu. Bash and crash the TUSD superintendent. Then hire another. Bash and crash. Then another one. Repeat process ad nauseum to the satisfaction of ornery ignorant people with nothing good to say about anybody.

Re: “TUSD Sideshow

First, the reporter counted wrong. There were more than 3 people who spoke in opposition to Sanchez. Furthermore at least 3 senior TUSD administrators broadcast emails trying to get people to come out in support of Sanchez. The TUSD email system was used! Ms. Foster also put an effort into getting people to turn out to support Sanchez. If after all that effort only 20 people showed up to support Sanchez, that's not much of an endorsement for keeping him.

There was no effort at all to get people to speak in opposition to Sanchez.

The November TUSD Board election was a strong vote to bring serious change to the district. Continuity lost; positive change won. And that is what Ms. Sedgwick is doing. She has exhibited courage in the face of multiple despicable attempts to smear her and damage her reputation. To understand what is going on in TUSD, my advice is to watch a few Board meetings and skip reading the Tucson Weekly for a while

Re: “Jerry Falwell Jr. to Head Trump's Higher Ed Deregulation Task Force. Expect a Big Boost for Liberty—Falwell's Liberty University, That Is.

I went to the fully-accredited (regional accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission) for-profit University of Phoenix and I can honestly say I received an exemplary education and it was much better than any education at any not-for-profit state public universities I have attended. I learned amazing skills and consider myself a scholar who is published and notable in his field. The University of Phoenix curriculum was rigorous, meaningful, relevant, and applicable. Not all for-profit schools are "bad" and many schools are changing and adapting to the new rules, for the better! Oh, and let us not start a new form of discrimination where we discriminate against for-profit graduates. These are some of the hardest working Americans I know! And those who complain about not finishing UoPx they could not handle the rigor. Do not ever undermine anyones education. I love the University of Phoenix, enrolling students since 1976, and so do its 1,000,000 Alumni!! Surveys conducted suggested that 92% of alumni are satisfied with their education and outcome. Finally, DO NOT forget that the University of Phoenix educated the non-traditional students and I thank the University of Phoenix! The University filled a demand where traditional academia would NOT! Stop vilifying my school!
