Educated for at least 10 years in the parochial school system in the diocese of tucson. Not a bright man, but he gives credit to his "Hispanic" friends in grade school with helping him understand long division and learning to spell, he claimed, in a kxci radio station interview years ago. Obviously he didn't learn homonyms...he thinks a jester and a gesture share the same meaning. Bright little boy he is.
Obama caused this. Impeach him and remove him from office. Barber has done nothing. Either has McCain. They are all liars.
I do not think that broadening the admissions and retention policies based solely upon racial and ethnic population numbers (often guided by surname counts, discounting mixed ethnicity, will do anyone any good.
In the alternative, however, I would suggest that dedicating another campus or school with the same standards, support and facilities would be a start. It, possibly, could be more an open enrollment policy, but with strongly announced and enforced retention poicies, a contract with students and parents.
If this succeeds, a model might develop that reaches a little further each step -- in bringing our schools out of the mire ofp[andering to parents, ignorant of the needs of other from various cultures, or ignorant of the subjects including respponsible liberty in citizenship the attains to a better education.

The question is, will broadening the admission requirements lower the academic standing of the school? The answer, I think, is no, and absolutely. Simultaneously. It needn't make the experience of the individual student any less rich academically, and it might actually add breadth and depth to the experience. But it may lower the overall academic ranking for UHS because some of the new students may be lower achievers than the current student body. To which I say, great! If students have to struggle to meet the school's high standards, and are willing to struggle to keep up, isn't that a good thing for them and for the greater community, even if they don't do as well in their AP classes or on their standardized tests? The purpose of the school isn't to make the top 10 on the U.S. News & World Report standings. It's to provide an excellent education for students who are capable and hard working enough to rise to the challenge. (Within limits), the more the merrier!
Ultimately being a capitalist society we can vote with our feet, Hobby Lobby can keep only the barefoot and pregnant 2nd class citizen/employees and maintain their religious right to persecute the unbelievers and we can get our hobby supplies elsewhere.

The problem is that we think we need more illegal immigrants (illegal aliens) from Central America or Mexico. How about a bunch of Indian computer engineers, or Korean steel workers, or German mechanics. People who are nor likely to create crime or stay on welfare and who will learn English from the first day. (Oh wait they probably already know English!)

It's a shame the Supreme Court didn't say to Hobby Lobby and Conestoga: "Unincorporate and do as you like." Incorporation involves some benefits, e.g., no personal responsibility of the owners for the acts of the corporation, but also some responsibilities, one of which is obedience to the general laws binding corporations. SCOTUS has decided that these family businesses can have the benefits of incorporation while excusing themselves from compliance with one aspect of the Affordable Care Act due to the personal -- hardly corporate -- religious convictions of the owners. The decision is deplorable mostly because it adds one more element to the 'personhood' of corporations, even if only closely held ones in the present instance. If we ever get a Congress and a President who can work together to clarify the law -- probably including the Constitution -- by way of elimination of rights and privileges of citizenship and personhood for corporations, we won't have this sort of foolishness any longer. But I am not holding my breath. Too many powerful persons -- real and fictional -- benefit too much from the present nonsensical situation.
AND this decision by the five, white, male, catholic, radicals on the court is another brick in the phony wall of corporate "rights" trumping Human Rights!
If this decaying country lasts long enough, these egregious, tortuous, evil "decisions" based on the five radical's ideology instead of any rational reading of the Constitution or the Intent of the Founders will, like Dred Scott and Separate but Equal, be overturned...

Excellent post on the most important issue facing teachers struggling with federally mandated school improvement programs, now CCSS, before NCLB. These drill'em, kill'em mandates assume a level of college preparation of aspiring teachers and professional development of current teachers that simply does not exist. The "new teacher" is expected to be a diagnostician and expert in proven interventions - sort of like a physician. Fine, let's treat future teachers as medical students.
Before we can revamp the schools and begin competing internationally there has to be a radical restructuring of teacher development and compensation attracting highly competent individuals to the profession. No Child Left Behind and now Race To The Top with the Common Core Standards for States has nearly destroyed public education and will continue to harm even more students and teachers. You can blame Bush or Obama, ultimately they are both responsible for creating an atmosphere of fear and loathing among our teachers and students, ruining at least another generation of kids and neutering those who would help them grow. And you can throw in Bill and Melinda Gates, Pearson and an army of "experts" engaged in today's version of the great gold rush.
Follow the money and understand why Arne Duncan was selected over Linda Darling-Hammond. Public education is a huge, trillion dollar, enterprise and the pigs are feasting while the other farm animals fight over scraps.
The Federal involvement in education is of less significance than here at the local level and do we have work to do! Here in Arizona, our education funding level is 48th in the nation a full $3000 per student less than the national average. School administrators are caught in a huge financial squeeze having to defer maintenance, making do with last years books, and so forth. Meanwhile our teachers, already grossly underpaid for what they do, for their education level and for the hours they work, must reach into their own pockets to purchase school supplies. IMHO we are entering into a downward spiral that will end in total failure of our public schools. This movement is deliberate and brought to us by very conservative groups like ALEC and the Goldwater Institute. i encourage one and all who read this to go to Adopt a Classroom (www.adoptaclassroom.org) and consider supporting a local classroom. And by all means, let's all pay attention.

I could not agree more: Obama made a horrible choice for Secretary of Education. And it is a fact that education in the U.S.A. is unlikely to improve very much unless we address the high level of childhood poverty in America, and honor and value the teaching profession.
What we have going on in the U.S. today is a stupid, ridiculous battle between private and public, and the private is winning this battle at the expense of all things public: schools, libraries, parks, wilderness areas, beaches, etc., etc..
The advocates for all things becoming privately owned are convinced that they are returning America to its original intent. But they are wrong. The Founding Fathers and early economists like Adam Smith knew the importance of the public and public ownership of land for public schools, etc.
The Public, or the Commons is important and necessary for democracy and the economy to work. Public schools must be strengthened, not weakened. Indeed, Linda Darling-Hammond would have been a far better choice for Secretary of Education. Perhaps she will in 2016.
Why not replicate the UHS model elsewhere? Don't tell me the magic is all locked up at 5th and Swan on the Rincon campus.
