this is really disheartening. I really loved Tucson and have had some really awesome times there. But talking shit on a touring band (a great one nonetheless) is pretty low. I appreciate the kind words said about me, but I admire these guys, and I assure you if I had written this review there would have been some big differences. It just make me sad to see an extremely talented, kind, and dedicated band drive for hours to play a show just to get bashed in the local newspaper.
I am a homo sapien sapien. I have evolved on this planet into an omnivorous mammal. I have eyes facing forward like any predator to make me a more efficient hunter. I love wildlife. It's delicious.
You are all heart...probably a good Christian...in your dreams. in real life you very mean spirited. What exactly is "smut?"
"All animals have the same parts" - really PETA? Does that include pit bulls? How about the animals you take in your front door that people think are being adopted out? Are they included in "all"?
How few people realize that there is little that is 'ethical' about PETA. They advocate for breed specific legislation to outlaw pit bulls, along with the euthanization of them immediately upon intake to a shelter anywhere, and have a kill rate of over 90% IN THEIR OWN "SHELTER". I'd rather go naked than donate to PETA. For more information see Nathan Winograd on Huffpost: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/nathan-j-winograd/peta-kills-puppies-kittens_b_2979220.html
OK, so the point of this stunt was to encourage people not to eat mean? I don't get it; she looks pretty appetizing to me. Mixed message at best.
JCS..no one did a better job of covering the politics of Tucson and southern Arizona!
it never ceases to amaze me that some people out there can make such mean comments about public people and their livelihoods.
As for uber-Christian run KVOI....no tolerance for another viewpoint. Hypocritical and judgemental about anyone who apparently is not as holy they pretend to be.
Ron Barber never likes anything he votes for but "it's a step in the right direction."
They marched them to the ovens in Auschwitz, one step at a time.
Repeal Obamacare before Obama bails out the health insurance industry, he is bankrupting.
I demand that A & E fire her. That's hate speech and she's meataphobic.
Carnivore, the spokesperson was from Los Angeles. C'mon, bro.
That said, I'm right there next to you at Diablo Burger. Mm, flesh.
I don't tell you what and what not to eat.You should respect other people's rights. As we do yours, shame on you for infringing on the rights of others. Don't eat meat it's ok with me. Really!
Great. More self righteous pricks trying to tell me that i am wrong for eating meat. GO BACK TO SAN FRANCISCO!
Thanks to Casey Dewey and the TW team for doing such a fine job interviewing my Mother and summing up my family's history, dedication, melancholy and a certain thrill of pride having worked so hard for nearly 50 years to bring joy to so many people's lives.
I just want folks to realize that this is a gift from the Residents of Winterhaven to the Masses. We collectively pay for all the expenses regarding the Festival, which is estimated to be around $65,000 per year. There is NO ADMISSION CHARGE to get into Winterhaven and the Festival of Lights. However, it is requested that each person bring some non-perishable food for the Community Food Bank. Collection Stations will be at the Country Club and Ft. Lowell entrances. If you are coming for the Concert Show on our front lawn this Sunday evening, we will have a Collection Bin at our home at 3354 North Christmas Avenue for the evening of the 22nd only for those who enter the Prince or Tucson Boulevard entrances or slip by the bins at the other locations. Also, keep in mind it is a walk-through only night on the 22nd, so you will need to park outside the neighborhood and walk to the center "Island" area to come watch and hear Jovert Steel Drum Band play and Jodi Netzer dance.

Thanks again for the lovely article! jsb
It would seem that Tom has been into the Christmas grog a bit of late, given the disjointed and illusionary triad he has written. I am sure he will be displeased to know the photo he chose to illustrate Mandela is of a larger-than-life bronze statue in the Sandton Mall in Sandton, an affluent suburb of Johannesburg, which is the fanciest, most upscale shopping mall in the whole of Africa. A true capitalist haven if there ever was one.
On numerous occasions, I have had the opportunity to admire this rendering of a truly great man from my hotel room in the Michelangelo Hotel and marveled at the good he brought South Africa; including the shopping mall and many fine restaurants that surround his likeness in Mandela Square. A lesser, vindictive man would have destroyed the country and things like the Sandton Mall would never have come to be.
Where Tom truly goes off the rails is in the effectiveness of the sanctions as he riles about the Republicans who opposed them. It was the many, many poor Africans who suffered for years because of this particular set of poorly conceived and applied sanctions. This I saw during the many trips I made to South Africa during what is still called “sanction times,” when recalling the economic difficulties for most. The Republicans and many others of the time knew who would be hurt and were against them for this reason – not as a support for apartheid. In my world view, if such sanctions truly worked, Cuba would have been free years ago.
Did these sanctions help end apartheid? Perhaps, but if so in a minor way as the country was changing dramatically under the forces from within – with the majority of the white population, including the Afrikaners supporting an end to apartheid. To be sure, any help in changing a bad political system is important. This is why I was quite happy with how Pinochet sorted out Chile’s problems (a bit of a barb at Tom).
Importantly, Tom do not despair, there will be great men and women in the future, just as there have been in the past. People like Harry Truman, Ronald Reagan and Margret Thatcher will arise and perhaps a Mandela-like person will lift the Middle East out of its perpetual despair someday. Have faith Tom, history has shown that there are good, brave people amongst us and they will respond to the call. Now, if we can just find someone to undertake the repair of our own failed government when Obama is out, life will be ever so good.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!
I find someone complaining about cigarette smoke, while standing next to a roadway, filled with vehicles pumping out carcinogens at a rate that can be measured in tons per hour, to be somewhat less than credible. Life is messy, and there is no such thing as a risk-free existence. Get over it, or don't. First world problems. Jeez.
CW13: You're taking the like/dislike thing too seriously. It doesn't go on your permanent record or anything.
Enjoying each one more than the last. Thank you Britt.
I misspoke. What I meant is that even the editor himself weighed in on my anti Dehaney rants. I do have a legit reason as I explained. You have to admit I do keep things interesting. If that picture is you and your son, I'm going to give you some advice. It looks like he's got his thumb and forefinger like a gun. You may want to discourage that. I'd hate to see the young man do that at school and get expelled. I'd wish you a happy hoilday, but I'd only get more dislikes.
CW13: Just because I asked you a question about your motivations doesn't mean I dislike you. My feelings don't run that strongly either way about you other than my general appreciation that you visit our website relatively frequently.
Ronko: More info about these "rants and vulgarities," please.
This is not a good thing.
Yes, JSC is a liberal ... but not a flaming one.
He sometimes let politicos slide when interviewing them ... meaning when he will talk negatively about them at other times, then schmooze up to them while he has them on the air.
But, he did have the guts to deplore the re-election of that liberal nazi Karen Ulrich and has gone on record against other liberal politicians and policies.
Although KVOI has the right to sell airtime to whomever they wish, JSC program was the most comprehensive local issue talk show in town ... bar none.
He has gone a bit overboard lately with the infomercial side of his program content (which probably was a mistake), but you have to appreciate the dialogue he brought to the issues which affect Tucsonans.
But don't worry ... the guy is a survivor, he has been on the air for 40 years and will no doubt pop up again somehow, somewhere.
The amount of money the Star spends on the TFOB could easily pay for several copy editors. Staff at the paper really dislikes that festival.
