Re: “A Dollar a Day, and Other Observations About Ducey's Education Funding Proposal

There are two problem with your argument, "Frances."

1. You assume "unregulated charter schools" and "unregulated private religious schools" can be contrasted with "regulated public district schools." The fact of the matter is that there are regulations on the books that are supposed to govern public district schools, but many of them, including many of the regulations relating to financial transparency, proper bidding practices, etc., are not enforced. About the only thing in Arizona education that is uniform and reliable is lack of proper oversight, and that applies to all three sectors: charter, private, and public district. It's the Wild West, across the board.

2. Conservatives don't want three systems funded, as though this costs 3x as much as funding one system. They want the per pupil funding which is allocated once per pupil to be transportable. If it is not applied in the public system, they want parents to have the option of applying it (or part of it) in alternative schools. It's a zero sum game: when the per pupil funding leaves the public system, so does the cost of educating that child. No one is "stealing" money that belongs to public schools. The money belongs with the child, to support their education. When the child goes, the money goes, too, and that is as it should be.

I know it's hard for monopolists to give up their death-grip on the commodity and market share they've been accustomed to controlling utterly. Their rage at the interruption of their inappropriate and counter-productive privilege is a lot of what we hear in the constant, dishonest "anti-privatization" rants in Safier's blog, in these comment streams, and elsewhere. But perhaps it is time to face the truth: if districts like TUSD had actually provided high quality services and served the best interests of their former students, they wouldn't be having the problems with declining enrollment they've been having now for more than a decade.

Re: “Southern Arizona Sanctuary Movement Makes a Statement

There is no federal law that says these havens for criminals cannot be raided and shut down. So this to holie to be arrested is simply a delusion.

Re: “Southern Arizona Sanctuary Movement Makes a Statement

Would Tucson's religious left give "sanctuary" to a white person wanted for federal income evasion, or is it only for brown people?

Re: “Southern Arizona Sanctuary Movement Makes a Statement

"He is going to deport the most dangerous criminal illegal immigrants." Oh, horrors, we can't have that. It can't be true anyway because everyone knows they are all good people who just want to help their families. They wouldn't do anything bad, would they. Not really.

Perhaps we wouldn't be having this conversation if millions of Mexicans hadn't swarmed our borders. Did the open border advocates really believe Americans would accept an invasion without pushing back.

Maybe some of Hillary's people will chalk up some sidewalks and make everyone feel better.

Hey Gustavo -- I want to know how the "American carnage" of Trump's inauguration address compares, in your experience, to American CARNITAS, as found across the U.S. both at mobile food and sit-down establishments. Michele M, (prima, El Cargadero).

Re: “Southern Arizona Sanctuary Movement Makes a Statement

Wed. Aug 31st in a campaign speech in Phoenix.
We are going to triple the number of ICE deportation officers, Trump said. Within ICE, I am going to create a new special deportation task force focused on identifying and quickly removing the most dangerous criminal illegal immigrants in America who have evaded justice.

Orange is the new BOSS.

By the way, my mimic should probably educate itself as to the purpose of the Electoral Collage. While imitation is allegedly the sincerest form of flattery, I'm not flattered by your ignorance, and no one is impressed by it.

Have the snowflakes really sunk so low as to be resorting to the "I know you are, but so am I" strategy?

Re: “T.H.R.E.A.T. Watch Begins in Earnest

"Houdini-level verbal escape artists who lie, deflect, distract"...what does that remind me of, locally?

Oh yeah:

http://www.tucsonweekly.com/TheRange/archives/2016/07/18/another-look-at-tusd-salary-hikes-and-prop-123

http://www.buckmastershow.com/2016/07/21/buckmaster-show-7212016-post-proposition-123-fallout/

(In the Buckmaster program, the lies, deflections and distractions start at about minute 33, when David Safier first opens his mouth and starts doing his SPIN on Prop 123 spending in TUSD.)

FYI, David, the frog has already boiled and he is long since dead. The turning point may have come in 2008, when it became clear that the financial industry in this country would be allowed to get away with anything, like a naughty child whose mommy excuses his destructive bad behavior and makes the servants (in the US, the work-for-a-living, taxpaying, gullible middle class) clean up his messes for him. At this point both sides, Republican & Democrat, are fully immersed in lies, deflections, distractions, spin, all masking the fact that Wall Street and / or the billionaire class owns both major parties. Different party, different set of hedge fund managers or industrialists. "Would you like the vanilla or rainblow flavor of neo-liberal capitalist exploitation?" That's the "choice" the American political system offers us at this point.

The NYTimes has this THREAT watch beat well covered, so you can leave the national scene to them and go back to defending the Grijalva network in Tucson. From the looks of recent TUSD Board meetings, they have their own set of THREATs to deal with, and they will no doubt continue to need a lap dog to yip at their enemies for them.

(Nintzel has already been at it, with Rachael Sedgwick:

I'm not sure why I refer to a huge rock group as an itty bitty snowflake.

And I also have no idea why I love Vagisil and toast with orange excrement on it.

Please take me away to the Funny Farm. It's the only place I will possibly ever fit in.

Re: “Danehy

I can't help but feel sorry for good 'ol Tom. And not for the just the usual reasons. How he's proud to admit that his wife is the bread winner in the family. His total contribution is writing for the Weekly and teaching a bunch of 16 year old girls how to run up and down a basketball court. What I'm referring to is the rotten week he's having. It started for anti-gun Tommy last week up in Phoenix when an armed citizen saved the life of an Az. state trooper by blowing away the scumbag who was attacking him. It got worse when let 'em all in Tommy found out that he was here illegally. And now today. President Donald J. Trump. So for the next 8 years you can write all the anti-Trump columns you please and it ain't going to make the slightest difference.
I'm looking for my first 100 dislike comment. Can you do it?
