There are some wonderful Apaches that come out of the Lutheran Schools in the White Mts.
As one of their former students I can say with out hesitating that they are truly amazing women. Tough as nails but some of the kindest, and most generous giving women you would ever want to meet. What they taught me has never left me. I learned how to sew, manners and respect for everything from people to each creature on God's earth, how to pray, how to sing, how to dance, my passion for world history, and Even the way I speak. I find myself teaching my own children things I was taught by the sisters. I went to Holy Angel's from pre school all the way to 8th grade and was a very proud graduate. I remember going home after my first day of my freshman year in Globe high school and being so upset and I'm tears because not only was it my first time ever being in a public school but it was so different. The kids were loud, out of order, mean, and you can imagine the embarrassment of being the only one to stand up because an adult entered the room... (something we were taught to do At Holy Angel's but apparently we don't do that in public Schools) We, were taught a great deal of respect for adults at Holy Angel's. Me and my other brother's and sisters 5 of us total all went to Holy Angel's and all 5 of us went from pre school to graduate 8th grade. At one point my Mom and Dad had all 5 of us in Holy Angel's. We were all taught by the sister's from sister Leonie, to sister Una, sister Breeda, sister Anne, sister Paul, sister Rosalynn, sister Agnes, and sister Concillio. Even my father graduated from Holy Angel's. My favorite thing was when we did our Christmas pageant that Sister Leonie would put together every year. It was a little play with different themes every year but it told people What the true meaning of Christmas was. I still remember the songs. From "silent night" done in sign language of course, to "Celebrate", "come all ye faithful" and every students favorite "I can feel the Christmas spirit in the air" I still remember every word of it. The school was absolutely amazing In every single way you can imagine. We had small classes so you got a lot of attention. Every child's education meant something to the sister's. They wanted you to be the Best person you could be. I use to love when we would have mass inside the convent where the sister's lived. They had the most beautiful little chapel inside. Also religion was a very important class. The amazing thing about it was we had so many different religions in Holy Angel's believe it or not. We had Mormon's, Baptist, Presbyterians, non denominationals, Lutheran, just about every religion you could think of and we were never ever judged because we were different. It was embraced. If anything we were taught to be tolerant of others and taught that just because you weren't a Catholic didn't mean God loved you any less. I think tolerance should be taught more in school's nowadays. Sister Leonie brought the student of the month to Globe too. One student from each grade was picked each month and put out for all to see with something written by your teacher of why you were picked for the month to be honored. The students had their pictures taken and put in the Arizona silverbelt newspaper and a picture of you and what your teacher wrote was put up on it'd bulletin board outside for everyone to see all month. It was a great Honor and soon all the other school's in the Globe-Miami area did the same. I was given a great Gift from my parents by having given me and my siblings one of the very finest educations in Globe. I was truly blessed to have these women play such a vital role in my life... now at the age of 32 I think back and realize that these women made me what I am today. Their love and desire for me and every student they taught to be whatever we wanted to be was such an unselfish gift that can never be repaid. Just paid forward to other's and shared with our own children. Thank you to all the Presentation sisters for all your hard work and devotion to us. It was truly a God sent gift that keeps on giving.
You had me @ Godot
Oh, my god! Please! Can we give it a rest? So much of this is nothing but unadulterated trash. I couldn't stomach past the part about 'The Kid' shooting "Windy" Cahill. That was so long ago debunked and yet it still keeps making the rounds. Ah! But you'll buy hook, line, and stinker of the preposterous tale of Billy living to old age! Oh, yeh. And the "Wanted" poster? It's also a total fake. Didn't show up until sometime in the 1940's, I believe. (They wanted that poor kid then? Still?)
Truth is, Billy was killed at the age of around 19 - far from the 21 years claimed by Pat Garrett, who knew little about Billy other than what he was told by Billy, himself.
The truth is, Billy was considered quite a handsome young man by those who knew him - and even those who didn't like him more often than not would grudgingly admit he was a good looking kid.
Truth is, most of what is 'thought to be true' about Billy comes from a book ghost written by one hack journalist by the name of Ash Upson for Pat Garrett. Garrett had delusions of grandeur and aspirations of becoming the first Governor of New Mexico when it became a state.
Truth is, Garrett tore up the coroner's death certificate and dictated one declaring Billy to be 21 years old and shot in the chest, not in the back. (It wouldn't look good for a man wanting to be governor to shoot a nineteen year old kid in the back now, would it?)
Oh, yeh. Another bit of truth. Pat Garrett and Billy were not really friends. They played cards together. In fact, the first time they played, Billy was probably 14, and he strolled into the bar where Garrett worked. Garrett figured to take the kid's money and send him on his way. "The Kid" took Pat's money, instead. And Garrett held a grudge against him ever after for embarrassing him in his own saloon, though they did play often after and, reports have it that Garrett, once he learned not to underestimate the kid, held his own... more or less.
Truth is, this bit of tripe is so full of inaccuracies and outright falsehoods that it should have a warning label notifying any readers that it is pure fiction.
Truth is, it appears the "author", Mr. Leo Banks, obviously failed to do ANY fact checking before he hit his button.
Truth is... there is very little truth in this piece.
Great, relateable story, and AMAZING writing!
We will still to gleaning the backyard bounty and work to educate Pima county on how to use more from the edible trees that abound thriving on our precious water resources while we lower our carbon footprint. Other groups concentrate on the grocery stores but we are considering collaborative efforts with CompostCats where we can redistribute the edibles while they continue to compost com post ables. We even donate to the food insecure students via the UofA food pantry. We also donate to schools and starting today to the CFBSA snack packs program via St. Francis in the Foothills UMC.
Yes i think there's a really high probability that i know were this site is located. I must go again and make sure.
This is wonderful, thanks for writing the article! I hate to see food wasted.
'aren't you afraid that after reviewing your column in toto, that Arizona itself may be turning into one big joke? Seriously, if we are to take YOUR comments seriously, are we not to assume that Arizona has fallen down the rabbit hole? Is that not where you are leading us?
This would make an interesting book with picture of the items harvested and processed. For example, "prickly pear, mesquite pods, amaranth,", how were they processed, prepared, eaten. I do not know of anyone that eats mesquite pods and I thought Amaranth was a lot of work to harvest. It would be a great "coffee table"and recipe book. Proceeds could go to continuing the wonderful work being done.
I was making reference to the fraud that TUSD had experienced, much like this that has been uncovered across the country:
Rat - that's true at most elementary schools. Some schools now encourage kids to return the food that they now they aren't going to eat. not french fries but the milk and such. the food the shared with kids who want it or used at another day.'
Start at TUSD lunch rooms. The food that isn't stolen is thrown away.
Paid for with federal tax dollars, so it's not like it's our money.*
Wonder if Ally Miller will decide to sue newspapers who use her name without her permission....
"Chavez often complained bitterly about illegal aliens crossing the border and driving down wages for union jobs."
Ah, the irony for the open borders, but supposedly pro-union crowd.
How about a side of wolves to go with those grizzlies? I know a State that would gladly share both. Grizzlies don't kill people.....Oh wait, maybe they do.
No mention of ISIS amassing to sneak across the Mexican border? You are failing us here, Leo.
Feeding time! Nothing like a good cold glass of hate with yer weekly. If nothing else, we are living proof that (a) our societies days are numbered, and (b) we are going to go out in an unparalleled spree of violence when we do reach the crossover point of not enough people with jobs or other occupation to keep them from turning on eachother (out in the open instead of sneaking around on comments pages). Nothing more than animals is all we ever were. Image & likeness of *od my foot. Actually, I'm surprised enough at the number of dislikes I have to wonder if there's a group being paid by the click. I'm actually hoping so, because I'm unable to hold within my heart the level of loathing required to believe this percentage of the population is that level of haters. It strains credulity. Telling us to keep hating ourselfves until we've exercised sufficiently? I must be missing something...y'all hate your own bodies, and you hate anyone who doesn't hate theirs too? I mean, if you hate the way you look, why proclaim so loudly the exercise religion? So you can hate yourself a few extra years longer? I workout, I smoke, I drink. All worth it to me right now (will probably change my mind right before it kills me). Not about to go blathering that this is the only right way to live your life to anyone else. How is eating too much somehow the original sin before all others? Second hand FAT is suffocating you? Why the hell live any longer in this world than you want to? If it wasn't for sunsets & sex I'd shoot myself right now. Everyone dies of heart disease, unless they get a large enough gift of chemicals from our wonderful invention at an early enough age - so if you have a heart attack after 70 you're a 'good' person, and if it's before 60, you're a 'bad' person? Y'all should step back and listen to yourselves for a moment. At least these girls are doing something positive with their lives. 'Rest of us are too busy working out to do anything but look inward apparently, with brief pauses to barf our negative emotions on people we've never met. Lol, I've been thinking about it long enough it's momentarily absurd enough to be funny.
p.s. Grammar is spelling's sister. Irony much?
p.p.s. I'm an anarchist (look it up, it doesn't mean what you think it does). Does that give me cred to say the word socialism has lost all meaning whatsoever? It's just a team shirt now. What stretch of the imagination brings our political system into confluence with body image issues? Do you walk up to people in bars and tell them to stop smoking cause the 'socialized medicine' is breaking the back of the government you (and I, and some 60 or 70% of the rest of us) hate? Would it be so bad if the feds defaulted & dissolved? Going to do a class action suit against Pepsi cause they are bankrupting our hospitals like Philip Morris? Have we been programmed to think of nothing else? This era has produced some awfully strange mental fetishes...
Speech is free, must be why it's gotten so cheap...Leave. People. Be.
