Re: “Marijuana Like Alcohol?

The Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area reports cited by Ms Polk are deceptive, dishonest and acknowledge no positive effects from legalization. In reality, the benefits of a legal, regulated market are obvious, abundant and have been an unqualified success. Arizona can join in that success or remain in denial by continuing to favor an uncontrollable black market and making criminals of adults who prefer a safer alternative to alcohol or tobacco and are causing no harm to themselves or others.

Re: “Marijuana Like Alcohol?

Wow. - The prohibitionists are addicted to criminalizing good citizens who prefer near harmless marijuana over addictive, very harmful alcohol. -- Such ugly bigotry.

Science and widespread experience have shown marijuana has no significant harms. -- Smart employers of the future will prefer their employees consume near harmless marijuana, rather than addictive, very harmful, violence inducing, traffic carnage fueling, hangover-producing alcohol.

End the fraudulent, federal, marijuana prohibition with two clicks!

Re: “X-Men: Apocalypse is the Worst Movie in an Otherwise Solid Franchise

This so called "review" is a joke, right? I mean really, if you were a fan of the comics or the early 90s television cartoon then you would appreciate this movie instead of being confused. Was the story too hard for you to follow? You clearly have no knowledge of the cannon material the series is based off if you think that X3 was better than Apocalypse. Singer's return heralded a return to a truer x-men universe. I agree with the comment above, your opinion is completely irrelevant. Please do not review anymore movies.

We would be better off to eliminate the US Dept of Education, and split the money between the 50 states. Would that stop all this ridiculous bickering where NOTHING gets accomplished?

Re: “Ducey 'Next Step' Watch: 2 Month Anniversary

Guess he keeps dishing these out because he gets Facebook likes from the uninformed, who read the blog, but not the "fine print" in the comments section.

For those who do read the fine print: Who does Safier think he's kidding when he criticizes DuVal for cooperating with Ducey? What did he think he himself was doing when he "held his nose and voted for 123" and kept blogging the misleading statement that the Prop would "restore" lost funding? Safier, like DuVal, was part of the team that got it passed. (And what would little Heliodoro have done is 123, didn't pass, David? He wouldn't have been able to use 30% of it to give piddling $700 raises to our underpaid teachers, causing all the recent outrage about failures of promise fulfillment. Then again, considering the negative PR fallout from that story in the months preceding the upcoming TUSD Board election, perhaps, for those who want the two members of the majority who approved that decision re-elected, it would have been better if 123 hadn't passed, though they promoted it assiduously and in many cases with dishonest and / or misleading propaganda.)

Sometimes I think Safier writes these blog posts just so his candidate friends can have "news" stories to link in their Facebook posts. Those who don't know that this is not real journalism can read the linked blog and get what they think is "independent verification" of what the politicians' Facebook posts say. We'll see how well this self-reinforcing closed feedback loop is working this election cycle come November.

I appreciated the article as a "heads up" that the current world news might have some threads locally. Thanks David, and please write up any updates as they occur.
Sometimes the only way I get this kind of info is from the Weekly.

Re: “Ducey 'Next Step' Watch: 2 Month Anniversary

Why don't you put your energy into working in support candidates up for election in November 2016 who, if they join the AZ legislature, will tip the balance and make it harder for Ducey to push his noxious plans through? I believe one of your commenters suggested that recently and it seemed a good idea to me. Definitely more productive than this inane, ongoing "Next Step Watch," which is never going to make a damn bit of difference with anyone.

RE the AEA, ASBA, etc.: do you really think they have credibility with the anti-ALEC crowd, after what they did with 123 ?

Re: “Obama Administration Asks Supreme Court to Rehear Lawsuit On Immigration Relief Programs for Undocumented Parents, Youth

He's obviously worried that Trump has a chance of getting in and he wants to Legalize 5,000,000 Illegals to be promptly put on WELFARE. THIS IS AGAINST THRE LAW:
(INA § 235(b)(1)(B)(iii)): "The removal of an alien who is inadmissible because the individual does not possess valid entry documents or is inadmissible for fraud or misrepresentation of material fact. The alien may be removed without a hearing before an immigration court." pg 2, Box 1, right side.

The WORST OBAMA BASTARDIZATION:
On February 13th, 2013 Chris Crane, president of the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council states under oath to the Senate Judiciary Committee “Immigration agents are regularly prohibited from enforcing United States Immigration LAW. According to NEW POLICY, immigration agents can no longer arrest persons solely for entering the United States illegally. Officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement have exposed agents to danger from gang members in detention centers, and that -
they threatened to discipline agents for detaining illegal immigrants encountered on the street." https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

They already heard it!

Re: “Another Look at TUSD Salary Hikes and Prop 123

There's really no point in responding to you, Frances, because you make the same tired (and in my view, invalid) arguments over and over again, no matter what any commenter writes.

Yes, public education should be better funded. No, most of us who write here don't agree with the legislative and funding priorities of our state level government. Yes, it's true that the court cases the legislature has lost -- like the one over the 301 funding that is owed -- should be enforced.

The fact remains that within the context our state level government establishes, local governing boards do better and worse jobs building the public confidence they need to deliver adequate services in a situation in which it cannot be argued that bonds and overrides are not desperately needed. TUSD's track record for the past three years has been poor in this department. I have served as a volunteer in several of the district's schools, I have been a parent with a child enrolled in one of the district's schools in recent years, I read just about everything published about the district in the local media, I watch many of the Board meetings, and I talk regularly with people who have known the district well for a long time, some of whom have been or are administrators, governing board members, and teachers in the district. I take seriously the need to be well informed and to weigh and consider the various arguments that are being made about the district's governance and administrative decisions, and I haven't seen any valid arguments made in defense of the list of governance decisions given in the comment in this stream entitled, "Supporting Public Ed Means Supporting Local Reform." Your argument seems to be, "they're underfunded, so they must be excused for every lie, every piece of malfeasance." Sorry, I don't buy that, and I don't think relating to local governing boards this way produces good results for the children enrolled in the schools these boards are supposed to oversee.

If you don't think that citizens who don't file petitions to run for the governing board have a right to comment in public discussions about the district, all I can say is, that's a ridiculous claim. You're not, to my knowledge, running for the TUSD board and you evidently feel it's valid for you to express your opinion -- repeatedly. So be civil and grant other citizens that right as well, even when you disagree with them.
