Re: “What Best of Tucson Categories Do We Need?

Yeah, yeah...I'm late to this, but it would be great to have a Best Massage Clinic category, since Tucson has so many - and they typically don't fit into the Spa or Alternative Health category, although that's where many end up.

Re: “Danehy

Tom-I generally agree with your positions. But this one is wrong on so many different levels: "If I commit an armed robbery, start a fire at a church, break into somebody's house, steal a car, rob a Wal-Mart, and walk down the street shooting a stolen rifle in the air, I hereby give any and all law-enforcement personnel the right to use their car bumpers to knock me 40 feet in the air before I can commit another crime." First, every human in the U.S. has a constitutional right to be free from unreasonable seizures by a government agent. The poor guy who shot in the back because he ran from a cop because he had an outstanding warrant and was pulled over for was unreasonably seized. And so was the guy in Marana. He hadn't been convicted of any of the crimes he was alleged to have committed. We reserve punishment for crimes for those who have been convicted. Marana PD had the situation under control. And finally, who gets to decide how bad a person's act can be before the police can beat the hell out of him in order to stop them? You? The GOP controlled legislature? I'm disappointed that you support extrajudicial punishment when you've complained about government over reach on constitutional issues in the past.

Zachary's Pizza will always be one of Tucson's central culinary offerings. Sorry if you missed it. Nothing like it. RIP. Had some stashed in the freezer until recently. Couldn't bear to finish it.

Everytime Ducey sneezes the Left is all over him like a new suit. I'm curious if just one of you is going to step forward and compliment him on this. Ain't holding my breath, but one never knows.

Re: “Danehy

The biggest wasteful spender in our government is the defense department. Yet nobody, republican nor democrat, dare propose a budget that kills making unnecessary, unwanted weapons. Just cutting that part makes a huge budget difference. Keeping a large army parked overseas (either in Saudi Arabia or Ukraine) is only for show and not for actual war. Troops are still deployed the way they were back in WWII. Time to rethink the whole thing. We don't need thousands of soldiers in europe or the middle east. We can deploy an entire military force within hours of a threat. So, why base those troops overseas? Anybody remember how fast we got entire tank battalions on the ground in Kuwait? Let's save money and bring the troops home.

Re: “Legal Theft, Part I

This is a good argument for just making marijahuna legal.

As far as the police go, there are too many of them. This is true just about everywhere in the United States. It's time to start refusing them increases in staff, reguardless of how the ask, argue, whine, or cry.

Re: “Danehy

Ignoring the rest of Tom's usual blithering, I would like to say that most people realize that we need taxes, it's the mountain of wasteful spending of those funds that we find repulsive.

Re: “Guest Opinion

Get batteries if you can afford them, you may just be glad you did. (You're gonna need a lot to run A/C in Tucson, FYI; maybe you should insulate the house first/instead).

Batteries = Off Grid. No TEP, no APS, no ACC.

They screw with you, you 'move' and have the electric disconnected.

Give the guys in suits the finger, you're American, do it with pride!

Even ducklings are smart enough to run away when some wacko is walking down their street firing a rifle.

I remember when it was first opened. We lived in Tucson at the time and were up there as being one of their customers to have rented the most movies, but we moved out of town. Fond memories.

Re: “Bull Session

Pima Mujer, there is an interesting crisis brewing in the school suit. The parties are now in "settlement" talks. If they fail to settle and the judge enters a final judgment, who is going to enforce that judgment? The sheriff normally does that, but in this case, we're talking about Joe Arpaio, who is not likely to do so. How does a state court force the state to obey a court order without the assistance of the designated police power? Interesting question (one that goes all the way back to a case called Marbury v. Madison!) We could be facing a breakdown of the rule of law in Arizona over this case.

Re: “Partial Freedom

So no bill would have been preferable to a flawed bill? Councilman Kozachik's disappointment is understandable but given the disinterest of the AZ GOP Legislature to social justice, its amazing that ANYTHING made it through. It should also have been pointed out in the article that this is a national campaign and success in all fifty states will take years of patient struggle against conservative prosecutors and judges like Montgomery.

Re: “Ryan Adams' Live Set at Rialto Proves Whiskeytown Is Dead

I got to see Ryan a few months ago in Phoenix when he played at Gammage Auditorium and was happily surprised at how well he handled that huge space and still kept it personal. One of the most enjoyable shows I have seen in ages! I would have loved to see this show at Rialto. Thank goodness Elliott is there to take photos. It just proves that, once again, Tucson offers top flight shows in much more casual settings like the Rialto and the Fox!

Re: “Marijuana Policy Project Files Weed Legalization Initiative with State

Compared to other recreational drugs -- including alcohol -- marijuana may be even safer than previously thought. And researchers may be systematically underestimating risks associated with alcohol use. Those are the findings of recent research published in the journal Scientific Reports, a subsidiary of Nature. Researchers sought to quantify the risk of death associated with the use of a variety of commonly-used substances. They found that at the level of individual use, alcohol was the deadliest substance, followed by heroin and cocaine.

At the bottom of the list? Marijuana -- roughly 114 times less deadly than booze, according to the authors, who ran calculations that compared lethal doses of a given substance with the amount that a typical person uses.

Drug warriors report that the adverse effects of marijuana are associated with early adolescent use. This is the type of use that regulation of marijuana can reduce by asking for ID’s from our kids. We are all better off to have marijuana sold in a local and legal retail market that asks for ID’s, sells only marijuana, pays taxes, and settle their disputes in our courts. A visible legal company allows far more societal control than a hidden underground criminal enterprise with no government controls that settle their disputes with guns on our streets and in our neighborhoods.

The DEA's own administrative law judge, Francis Young, concluded after an exhaustive review of the evidence:

"Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man."

Legalize and regulate like alcohol in Arizona in 2016. This is the right thing to do for our citizens and especially for our children who may seek marijuana but are offered black tar heroin by cartel dealers.
