Re: “The New York Times is Telling the Story of How Tucson Became an 'Unlikely Food Star'

Weeeelllll...I think you're both sort of right, JJ. Yes, the focus was very much on the UNESCO designation, but I thought there was a faintly patronizing air about the article, as if the writer were racking her brains wondering how on earth this utterly provincial little desert hamlet could ever have earned such an honor.

Re: “Media Watch

Sony Wasu was totally biased in her reporting on a student fight at Sahuaro HS relying on a "source" who was the mother of the "victim" who started the fight. Good riddance.

Re: “The New York Times is Telling the Story of How Tucson Became an 'Unlikely Food Star'

TW missed the point of the NYT article. It was not about Sonoran cuisine or restaurants. See here for more info http://tucson.com/business/local/unesco-de…

Re: “What John Oliver Said About Charter Schools

Being paid with "taxpayer money" should mean that charter schools will open their books for taxpayer review and approval. But it apparently does not make them flinch at all. The examples mentioned by John Oliver for administrative malfeasance, deceitful "EMO" operations and hollow online charters are not fictitious. And as such, these operations are not just unethical but they are truly repulsive and nauseating abuses of a public trust. All charter school operations should open their books and show how they work and who gets what. Anyone who runs a clean and effective charter should just do it.

Re: “World View Case Moves Forward After Motion Denied

Real economic opportunities do not need to be tied to tax payer dollars and dependent politicians. IBM disproved the adage, "if you build it they will stay." We have commercial spaces available and we have open land that could be developed. It does appear the PC took jobs/income away from local business in an effort to "look" successful.

Fix the damn roads and arrest the criminals. That's what they were elected to do.

Re: “World View Case Moves Forward After Motion Denied

World View represents the first real opportunity in a long time to create a new industry and worthwhile jobs in Tucson, on a large scale. Those who oppose its stationing in our neighborhood are willing to blow off what could be the anchor for Tucson's first new, major economic development in memory.

That would send a clear signal to other entrepreneurs and large investors to stay away, condemning our region to yet more decades of underdevelopment, lack of opportunity, failure to attract talent, and poverty -- all of which would continue to favor Maricopa County's development and domination, which is the real point of this lawsuit.

It's easy to lambast public officials, easy as it is to shoot yourself in the foot, two self-destructive entertainments popular among our more-benighted residents. "Keep Tucson s****y," indeed.

Re: “Tucson Salvage

I'm sitting in the Montreal airport, reading Brian's article, and reflecting back upon the cabbies, residents, Uber drivers, shopkeepers, random folks, etc. I engaged over the past week. One consensus among all of them: In the wake of the rise of trump, America has gone collectively insane. The article certainly reaffirms that, and more. Come November, I may return to Canada to check out the real estate... - Fred Mills, Asheville NC

Re: “McCain: "I Don't Want To Be One of These Old Guys That Should've Shoved Off"

Mccain obviously needs to be pushed out of office. For some time his days have been numbered, he is lucky to have fooled so many for so long. Mccain has been on both sides of the fence forever, often stabbing his constituents in the back. Time to go was twenty years ago!!

Re: “Tucson Salvage

I'll admit that I didn't greet all of our customers with the friendliest smile, but then it was worth the laughs when one of them dubbed me the "hot dog nazi." After all Zeppelin Dogs business card used to read (before the divorce) "Where the customer is sometimes wrong, and usually drunk."
I might have missed any mention of it, but I'm surprised that the article didn't say anything about the night of April 2, 2001 when our motorhome and Honda were torched in the riot on 4th Ave. We nearly lost our business not to mention our lives.

Re: “The Skinny

Pima Coutny Cartel, you may not be aware of just how right you are. Customs and Border Patrol just released a report that says they are storing the bodies of 850+ unidentified illegals that were recovered from border crossers. They are stored here in Tucson.

http://www.mrctv.org/blog/cbp-reports-850-unidentified-illegal-alien-bodies-one-morgue

Our President and sanctuary governments gave these people encouragement to break our laws to get here. These victims lie frozen here waiting to be identified.

Re: “What John Oliver Said About Charter Schools

Money. Money. Money. You have got to adjust the message because people catch on to that too fast. Why not call it something else. Like "let's INVEST in our children."

Oh wait, they're not our children are they? AZ teaching professional choose not to send their kids to public schools so they earn enough to pay for it. But let's continue to keep the poor down and leave them stuck in declining schools with less than the best teachers. You're the one that said they are working in other fields.

Re: “The Skinny

It looks like never Roger. The media is morally bankrupt and now we must move on without them.

Susan Hirsh, it is called Bleach Bit, and yes Hillary used it on her private server. If FBI Director Comey had any guts he would refer for investigation and prosecution. The fact that she incorporated it into her plan to hide government business on a private server is INTENT. Americans have no idea how deceptive this woman and her husband are. In less than 3 years they have amassed $150M dollars in personal savings. (That can be traced) makes you wonder why they used Swiss accounts in the 90s doesn't it?

How is that economy working for you?

Re: “The Skinny

When does the story get released about the Democrats illegally handing out our tax dollars to their favorite "charities," such as Planned Parenthood? Or, the Democrats funding a Private Business with our tax dollars? Or, the misuse of HURF Funds which has left our roads in dispair. It is sad that the Media isn't elected by the people, but rather it is bought and paid for by those who manipulate our elections.

Re: “What John Oliver Said About Charter Schools

If the kind of change Trump supporters are looking for does come, I suspect they will find that they have plenty more to lose. But, for the time being, it seems to feel good to many people in this country to make emphatic, "in your face" statements which promote the idea that a crass, unstable real estate developer will magically be able to solve all our problems as a nation. It is deeply troubling.

College educated, credentialed teachers who are choosing not to work in their profession because it does not pay a professional wage comparable to what they can earn in other professions requiring college degrees -- and there are thousands like this in the state now, more than enough to fill all the vacant positions currently filled by insufficiently qualified substitutes -- are not like Washington insiders who don't want to give up their unreasonably inflated salaries. They are people who could be doing the next generation a valuable and much-needed service, but who are unable or unwilling, quite reasonably, to provide that service at far below what is reasonable compensation for work requiring that much up-front investment in the education required to qualify.

In a context where the cost of college tuition has risen more than 300% in the last 30 years, education professionals, like other members of the college educated middle class, have to be prepared to pay back their own educational loans and to pay a small fortune to educate their own children.

Because there are so many people in this state who don't think their own children are worth the investment it actually takes to maintain fully qualified professionals in K-12 schools, many of our Arizona teaching professionals have to work in other fields in order to be able to afford to fully educate their own children. A sad irony.
