,You are hilarious, enjoyed your article....I have the stomach bug as we speak and its horrible
Hi. I only just saw this tonight. I'm Julia's sister. It's over two years now and I miss Julia so much. I used to do that walk with her when I came over from England for a vacation just six weeks before she was killed. It was wonderful to see her looking so healthy and happy and she loved that dog. I don't think I'd ever seen Julia so happy. So, thankyou for stopping by and thankyou for thinking and writing about it all. It fills in some of the details for me. Your warmth and humanity are precious to me. I miss her smile. It was something to see, believe me. And Gertie was a fine dog. I agree with Cheri, who is also a very good and close friend of mine. We find a certain peace in the comfort of strangers. Thankyou again.
Pat
Don't go. It's a jungle out there. And you are going to take a big chunk out of the sane/loony ratio.
ms osullivan
its been two years since this tragedy happened to julia and girty. julia was my best and closest friend. with the anniversary of her death i was just looking thru the internet to see related items and found your article. i felt some peace in your comments. i wish i had seen it before. thank you, cheri
In the grand scheme of things MJ did get the tributes he deserved. Ms Sullivan will get only a few comments upon her passing once the article "Because of the never quite proven talent, Ms Sullivan will get one little article in a local weekly and nothing more" is posted.
Jimmy,
I use them (the so-called four letter words) from time to time myself. Personally I mostly use them for emphasis. For those who use them all the time the emphasis is lost. I don't use them around stangers (people I don't know) because there are some people, after all, who aren't comfortable with certain words. When I write a letter to the editor, or send an email to a business, for example, I would never consider using the type of language about which we are speaking.
So...I just find it unusual when I see an article with expletives and certain metaphors (always by the same writer.) It's not my own style. Ms. O'Sullivan obviously doesn't feel that way at all. I guess she might walk into her bank and say "Shitty day outside, isn't it? I'd like to cash this fucking check." Again, it can be offensive to some people. Most other writers in your paper seem to get by without the expletives.
Gary
Gary: What's wrong with certain four letter words? They're just ... words.
I have a suggestion if you are going to pursue a similar career elsewhere: Please try to practice writing articles that are not peppered with four-letter words, and using bodily functions as metaphors. Otherwise you seem a talented writer; you don't need to use expletives in every article you write to convey your ideas. Your writing in that respect reminds me of a kid in school who has just learned such words and feels compelled to use them to excess to impress people. It's not impressive.

Hi Catherine. I've been a fan of yours forever. I'm going to miss you.
Seems like several of you great commentators are leaving so we are so much poorer for that.
Maybe you will return. I've tried to leave several times. It can get kinda sucky here sometimes, but it is realy just me. I leave, and find it sucks so much more everywhere else! I come back.
Maybe you will be publishing in another paper? You can send us a link?
Bueno.
Thanks for telling us, anyway, rather than just slipping away and not saying goodbye.
Stay warm,
Jake Elkins

Tucson
Catherine, After 35 years in Tucson, my job forced a relocation to SoCal two years ago. House a few blocks from the beach north of San Diego, sun, surf, culture, restaurants, beautiful people... I'd give it up in a heartbeat if I could move back and smell the creosote after a monsoon and see the sun come up over the Rincons. There is some elemental force there that weaves itself into your soul and doesn't diminish with time. I've enjoyed your writing and if I haven't made you reconsider your move, wish you well wherever you're headed.
Dear RTTucson,
You'll get sick of Tucson soon enough. But the Sonoran Desert is a great place to visit. Rent, don't buy!
Catherine, as a newcomer to Tucson (a mere yearling) I've seen all of the beauty you describe but none of the things lost. I know it's painful to see change to something you love and it's hard to tell from your article, but I hope your motivations for leaving are because of new opportunities and not because you've lost your old Tucson. Because the amazing beauty of Tucson is still here. Maybe it's just easier to see with these newcomer's eyes.
Catherine, that was most likely a 'she'. Males tend to be smaller and narrower in the abdomen.
Dear Catherine: I know how you feel. I was born and raised here. You will move on - there are places to go and people to meet - but one thing I can tell you from my life of trying to leave Tucson, its siren's song will pull you back one day.
With all that is wrong with Tucson, it is still like your mother. It gets on your nerves, makes you crazy, frustrates the heck out of you but you miss her endlessly when she is gone. That's the phenomenon known as Tucson.
Good luck to you.
You said
"even though he was acquitted of charges of molesting another boy in 2005, he admitted to having young boys sleep in his bed, was known to have given them alcohol, scanned porn sites with them and even gave them lessons in masturbation."
Ever been on a jury? Have to weigh the evidence presented , that is. Guilt or Reasonable doubt based on the evidence. Basta! Hasta!
Ms. O'Sullivan, please keep in mind that all of your irrefutable 'evidence' against Michael Jackson is little more than tabloid rumor. What bothers me is that so many people will take rumor and hearsay about a celebrity and accept it as fact. We do know that Michael Jackson was unusual due to growing up in unusual circumstances. We do know that the prosecution in the 2005 trial was a sham, a clearly, and poorly executed attempt at extortion. The rest is just speculation. How does this leave you with such moral certainty about who Michael Jackson was? This goes along with illogical claim that all celebrity trials are the same, and all celebrities are found innocent simply because they are rich. This is clearly not true if you examine them on a case to case basis. The evidence overwhelmingly pointed towards O.J. being guilty, yet he was judged innocent. MJ was judged innocent as well, but this time for good reason, as anyone that paid attention to what actually happened in the trial can tell you. Let's stop propagating tabloid myth, that has made celebrity even larger than life than before, as a major blight on our culture of simplistic judgement. Perhaps if we saw celebrities as the simple humans they are, with complex problems magnified by their monitarily complicated lives, we could learn something, and then turn our attention to more important subjects.
Ms. O'Sullivan, please keep in mind that your insticts towards moral superiority are not always right - I'd appreciate more nuanced columns from someone that has a pedestal to speak from, such as yours.
Ms. O'Sullivan never fails to enterain me with her excellent writing. I agree with TXJesse's comment above. It's about observations and opinions on life. Not just anybody can put these together in a way that others can identify with and enjoy a good chuckle over. I am a fan. Keep up the great articles!
Ok everybody who even puts weed in the same catagory as cocain crack or any other addictive drug should just shut the F up. And no people can not get addicted to marijuana..and people who say they are..are weak minded people who blame their problems on anything they can besides themselves.
Weed is a beautiful thing that takes away stress and pain. If it was such a terrible thing it wouldnt be givin to cancer, arthritis and aids patients to be able to stand living day to day. People need to stop hatting and start appreciating what God put on the earth for us. :]
Good column, Catherine. As for littlericky's "In this country you are innocent until proven guilty. So your opinion does not really count", that's seriously flawed logic.
Of course, littlericky probably wouldn't mind his young BOYS sleeping with a grown man. A grown man who admits he sleeps with young boys is NOT NORMAL. In fact, everything about MJ's behavior bespeaks not just pedophilia, but predatory pedophilia. And the thing about predators is, THEY DON'T STOP ON THEIR OWN.
She's entitled to her opinion, just as you are to yours, littlericky. Just because he was acquitted in ONE case and PAID OFF millions to avoid going to court in other cases, doesn't make him innocent. Oh, but then I suppose if littlericky were accused of such heinous acts, he would just pay them off and not protest his innocence to the end. Hell, if it were me, I would make SURE that my innocence were proven in a court of law! To think that to pay someone for their silence is a mark of innocence, well, that's extremely naive!!!!
Bryant did the SAME thing in Colorado, except he didn't pay her. He frightened her so much with things that his side leaked to the press that it was impossible to prosecute him. And I've seen some of the documents that never made it into court. It was an extremely brutal attack and in no way consensual. It wasn't the first time he'd done that, either, and since he got away with it, I'm sure not the last.
Very sad all around. But go ahead and make him your hero, littlericky. Says more about you than it does about him.
As I've been saying, MJ was a talented entertainer. TWENTY YEARS AGO. In the past few years, he became a freak and a predatory pedophile. Just because he wasn't caught doesn't mean it ain't so.
Re: “O'Sullivan”
Heroin is an epedemic Its agonizing for those who have had their family members go through it but seriously comparing it to marijuana??? Heroin atics go through severe changes in their physical state as well as mental state and may face their whole life craving dope ... marijuana no matter how its grown whether in a lab or the ground is plucked from the plant and smoked not chemically made into a drug or cut with anything unlike heroin... how does an herb resemble black tar?? Heroin kills many and ruins lives not one death has been atributed to marijuana the sad thing is by being illegal it is a gateway drug... by having marijuana and heroin in the same class of illegality kids will smoke pot first and see hey this is nothing bad like they said.in health class and then question is what I learned in health class really true about other drugs maybe we need to start being more honest about these things if marijuana were legal people wouldn't have to go through dealers that sell other narcotics that's where a lot of exposure can lie honestly comparing weed to heroin is like comparing vodka to crack
