Why is the text of the purported letter writer's letter not the same as in the Orange County Weekly, the home newspaper of "Ask a Mexican!"? The tone of the letter is quite different between the two versions.
That cartoon is so racist, it really offends me and I think you are just perpetuating negative stereotypes!
Excellent answer to "old glory Gary!!
One race, human?
Only 1 Race. Human.
Cantinflas started it:)
I know if we all unite in our Love of Christ. We will rid ourselves of any H8r ism.
I recall a visit from an old amigo from mi calle en Tucson many anos (no tilde on mi macina de escriber)ago who had been living in Mexico City for years announcing Anglo futbol en espanol por TV. We stop in an Anglo cantina /resturante por la lonche. He orders "La Plata Azule especial". I cannot describe what it appeared to be. But there was a lot of sour crema y tortillas floras penquenos on the plata. Mi amigo digame, "I have no damn idea what the XXXX this is, but it tastes ok!" The cantina/resturante? CHI CHI'S!!!
Hombre! I shudda known!! It was a new cantina and I didn't know! And we were in Michigan, I shudda known!
That was a complex answer. I suspect the simplest explanation is that the other ethnic restaurants have Mexican cooks or even are owned by Mexicans who figure they can pull in a few more pesos by adding Mexican cuisine to their menus. After all it's the best food in the world, right?
Thanks for your cogent answers as always, Mr. Arellano.
That said, just as US socio-economic stratification as designed policy ends up generating class-stratified behaviors, so does Mexico's.
So, the individual who asked what meta-question as to "what to ask a Mexican" should be enterado of this anthropological/sociological phenomenon as well.
In addition, Mexican culture adds an additional ingredient into the mix: pigmentocracy. Those who allegedly trace their lineage to white conquistadores and criollos and who never "mixed" with the local lovelies still discriminate and use pejoratives for mestizos and indios. And they tend to favor each other in finance, education and other employment opportunities. Hence, the primarily "brown flight" to the U.S. of the crumb-eating class.
Have the querent watch 10 weeks worth of 1940's and 1950's movies on "Cine Nostalgia" to get a feel for this upstairs/downstairs-like process.
Y siguele con tu cancion que me gusta la tonada, hermano.
The Mexican its right. Sonora its the perfect example of race and culture mix; actually, european and native´s are blended as no other part of Mexico does. In central and south México, european and native family backgrounds are unlikely to get mixed. In Sonora, european and native are so mixed that Sonorans don´t even know it. The Opata tribe, its totally gone. Not because the where exterminated, no, the Opatas women fell in love with the european man coming to explore the dangerous gold mines in the inhospitable old west (most of the times they came with no family). So Opata culture "disappeared", giving birth to the Rio Sonora culture. In Sonora, almost everyone has either Yaqui, Mayo, Opata, Pápago or Seri backgrounds. That is one of the main factors that model this region of North American culture (Arizona included).
Thanks for your recommendation on Poblano Hot Sauce! I live just north of Tucson so will look for it. I buy Cholula because I don't want to spend my pesos on another brand only to find I hate it. If the restaurants had a wider variety of sauces I'd try them all to find my favorite.
milwauqueños - LOL! I love it!
Bslap: As a guy who once had a job where I got letters from the public all the time, I can confirm that there really are folks who think this way and write letters like this.
Decolonization - the liberating process of learning that white people are responsible for all your problems.
Identity change goes thru 5 stages:
First, you believe what the dominant culture tells you about yourself
Second, you are getting a hint that it ain't true.
Third, you realize you have been had, and you get mad as h**l.
Fourth, you are still angry, but youbegin educating yourself about what you really are, rather than what you have been told you are.
Fifth, you let the anger go, as you fully integrate to your own new identity. What the dominant culture says is no longer relevant to your own identity.
Yo' Gringa in Mananland, quit trying to appease the Mexican culture. The more you give them, the more they want. Live your own life, take pride in who you are and continue learning of other cultures. Not trying to make them feel better about themselves. You can't make people feel pride in their own race if they don't already feel that way and it's not your responsibility to do so.
A Mexican is a citizen of Mexico. Apparently they and you are rather racist. Do you write this column from Mexico. Me thinks that you "the very smart one" should help your fellow men.
Güeros are not very popular in España either. They're usually Vascos who often think they're better than the la raza. Look up Limpieza de Sangre.
